Gil_Bahnsen Posted August 9, 2016 Report Posted August 9, 2016 I have been working on Kingsfold for several years now. http://kingsfoldsailboat.blogspot.com/ Since I learned about the Race to Alaska, I made some changes in my plans in order to make the boat safer when I enter next year's race. Those changes include replacing my according-to-the-plans keel and rudder with the fin keel and rudder that PAR designed. Here is a photo of the rudder in process. I am also going to make the cockpit self-draining. Yes, I know it's a small boat with a small cockpit, and I am a bit crazy. I'll keep you posted on my progress. Quote
PAR Posted August 10, 2016 Report Posted August 10, 2016 Really, an axe handle tiller? Well that'll chop up the competition. You're not crazy Gil, as you suggest you might be. If you actually were crazy, you wouldn't know it, so there'd be no reason for you to announce it. Quote
Action Tiger Posted August 10, 2016 Report Posted August 10, 2016 I think it's gonna get better... Peace, Robert Quote
PAR Posted August 10, 2016 Report Posted August 10, 2016 FWIW, I know of several sailors that after breaking tillers, have opted for the axe handle approuch. Quote
Action Tiger Posted August 10, 2016 Report Posted August 10, 2016 Oh, I meant the bit crazy part. It'll get better... I think an axe handle is a fine tiller, and a great multi use tool in Alaska. Bring a bit! I'm anxious to see this project unfold. Peace, Robert Quote
PAR Posted August 10, 2016 Report Posted August 10, 2016 . . . I'm anxious to see this project unfold . . . Me too, as I know what Gil has planned . . . Quote
Action Tiger Posted August 10, 2016 Report Posted August 10, 2016 I checked out his blog. I'm all in. Shoot, I'm doing the same kind of silly thing my own self, for a different place, because I HATE being cold. Quote
Gil_Bahnsen Posted August 17, 2016 Author Report Posted August 17, 2016 Thanks for the encouragement regarding my sanity... Paul's plans (for the fin/rudder upgrade) show a very nice laminated tiller which I may attempt the construction of some winter down the road a ways. Quote
Gil_Bahnsen Posted September 28, 2016 Author Report Posted September 28, 2016 I have begun illustrating my cockpit plans, prior to building them. More details can be found on my blog. http://kingsfoldsailboat.blogspot.com/2016/09/significant-modifications.html and I just added a cockpit top view to go along with this. http://kingsfoldsailboat.blogspot.com/2016/10/more-work-on-self-draining-cockpit-plans.html Quote
