  1. Found a very little used 11 yr old Merc (Tohatsu/Yamma?) 2.5 short shaft, 2-stroke, pull-n-go for my similar BRS15 on Craigslist for $300 that's light, pretty quiet, and runs very sweet. Will prob cut down one side of my transom too to get it a bit deeper & clear of mizz sheet. 2-stroke nice and thin and lets me store it in any direction on-board. Plan to go electric in time though. R
  2. Good for him!! Been suggesting same to Grandson in similar situation but looking to Chef. Encouraging him to volunteer as a galley slave in local restaurants and see if he really wants that environment. Best of luck & safe sailing for Josh! R
  3. Hi, An experienced C-K sailor (Sea Pearl) and friend, and I (some sailing exp) are considering the WT NC Ultramarathon 50 miler this Sep30 in my stock BRS15. Both retired so we can get in a good bit of practice on the Pamlico River Aug and Sep. Currently fitting her out with lights and other required/desired gear. Laced sails so planing to reef with repositioned single sails/mast roller reefing as Graham has suggested. Has it been run in this boat? Are there any boat specific challenges we need to be aware of? Anyone else trying it? Dumb idea :-I? All advice/suggs appreciated. Thanks, Rick
  4. Great info and guidance. I have a lot to learn on the proper care and handling of "woodies". Any chance of a pic of that large "V" guide. Should be good for my small BRS15 trailer too. Many thanks, Rick
  5. Fine input PAR as always, but wondering about the launch and recovery difficulties expressed. I'm new back to sailing but have launched and recovered heavy 3-4K FG powerboats 22-24' alone with little difficulty as long as ramp area water pretty quiet, and trailer, and winch decent, and have seen others doing same alone with much bigger boats. With an aux OB and tabernacle masts don't see a problem with the PS22 unless I'm really missing something? Planning on a PS22 myself for NC and beyond, and as OP said would be nice to have the size for Chesapeake waters and overnights. Just thoughts, R
  6. Thanks all and good info as always. Like Wes's idea of the log for reference, so will keep the Kestrel on my wish list, but will just get her out on the river and trust her and my instincts carefully, reef to the safe side, and learn. Tks, Rick
  7. Considering a pocket wind instrument like the Kestrel 3500 for my wish list. Thought it would help in setting safe sail configuration on my BRS15 in heavier weather, and like the barometer feature too for weather guessing. Would they be really practical and helpful for this returning to sailing ol' dog? Tks, Rick
  8. Congratulations Graham!! Neat you were able to register with Marissa! Cool you were able to keep both Citizenships. R
  9. Thank you for all the ideas and thoughts. Going to try one of the telescopic ones but bring it straight up with the mount near the top of the transom and clip/strap it up tight. Will get as many steps as can fit between the top and bottom of transom when closed so it will be clear of both mizzen sheets and water. Will also try rolling/climbing in from the stern quarter (when water warms a bit) as Tom suggested as freeboard there not much more than my canoes that I can still (for a few more years I hope) self rescue that way. Thanks again. Rick
  10. My Congrats! also. Jealous, and really happy for you all. Safe travels home. Rick
  11. Hi, Glad Richard's ok in NZ and prayers for the families of those lost and those injured. Are there any concerns with mounting a telescopic SS boarding ladder to the transome of my BRS15? Would ensure backing washers/plate. Thinking I would mount the bracket near the top of the ransom and hold the steps up and together with a strap to keep the folded steps just below top of transom and clear of the sheets, and above the WL. Would like to have this reboarding safety feature for our older bones just in case :-). Thanks, R
  12. Sweet little mini-cruiser and decent stats in her OP. Really nice work. Rick
  13. Hope all had a fun Christmas. Been through all the posts and keep looking for a easy reefing solution for my laced sails. Just saw in WB's Small Boats annual p.26 (cat-ketch Schooner 18) that mast roller furling is a solution, letting the reduced size sails set (acceptably?) w/o the sprits. Is there a safe way to pin/clamp the masts then to hold the mast and reef? Could mount a block/bracket on fwd deck for a pin through the alu mast but worry weakening it. Maybe some type of strap clamp? All thoughts appreciated. Happy New Year! Rick
  14. Looks and runs great. Nice color/bright combo. Fine work. What size OB? Rick
  15. Found a v. nice little 2000 Merc (Tohat?) 2str, 2.5hp LS nearby for $300 so bought it to try. Going to see if I can tweek the throttle to get a bit more toward 3.5 hp.
  16. Just a Wonderful weekend and great learning experience for this newbie. Thanks so much for great hosts, my "coaches" Marty and Kiki, and Joe and Sally (who improved my courage factor :-), and the docking help, and many other rigging tips and info everyone shared. Safe sailing n motoring, R
  17. Hi, Watching local CList and ebay but though someone here might have a little reliable OB they'd like to part with. Hopefully a good little 2 stroker w/F-N shift I could store up fwd in the BRS15 and mount easily on the port transom when needed. Know the old OMC ~2.5s good but are the old 2.7 hp Cruise n Carrys ok? Light weight the key. Have an ol' Evin 6 now but heavy and overkill. Rick, Eastern NC
  18. Great work and sweet color scheme. Wishing you all many fine days on the water. R
  19. Plan to be there Fri-Sun with newly acquired BRS15 #51 & camp in the van. Hoping to learn a lot on sailing & fitting her out, and share with any interested. Rick
  20. Thank you for the help. Will give it a go, and go easy on the heat. Rick
  21. Gouged about 6" of the lower port edge of my BRS15's keel down into the wood when it slipped off a roller on my home-made launch/recovery ramp and hung on a bolt head (missed the keel's rub strip :-(. From some earlier repair posts I read - can I just clean and smooth the damaged area, heat it a bit and paint with warmed epoxy for good absorption and to minimize possible delamination around it. Thanks, R
  22. Now I know why so many of you love yours . Had my BRS15 out on the Pamlico River today for the first time and really enjoyed her. Good bit of flopping and flailing about learning the rig in squirreley winds along the north shore, but great fun, never felt scarey, and hope to get enough learning time on the water not to be too embarrased at Messabout. Thanks to Graham for designing her and helping Larry McNellis build her, and for all your tips, ideas and help. Rick
  23. Hi, My BRS15 has two ~3/8" holes through the transom just under the quarter knees. I put nylon line loops through them for soft cleats. Can't find them or their role in the plans I have. Could they be used with the bow eye to rig a davit lift harness for launching off my bulkhead without stressing the boat's structure, or would a belly sling & spreader bar be better (if more challenging to set)? Anyone know of plans/kit for a low cost bulkhead davit? Tks, Rick
  24. Thanks Wes for sharing all the great ideas and pics. Been looking for similar solutions for my BRS15. Rick
  25. I'm literally in the same boat as Tom D with BRS15 #51 and appreciate the info. Has anyone tried Jim Michalak's vertical reefing system shown on his site referenced? Like the fact that you don't have to shift the sprit, just let it run a bit ahead of the mast. Tks, Rick
