  1. I’d suggest that paint, especially the underside, is NOT important. The fish might appreciate seeing a nice white finish but I’m not concerned about the fish view. The inside painting?, Only if it’s really irritating to your eye. I kinda like the look of the new modification wood being the epoxy finish… maybe just touching up the white that was removed. The goal, for now, is to get things set for your great sounding trip with Avocet to Florida for sailing adventure. Paint can wait. Just saying’.
  2. From a couple weeks ago. This Australian video maker inspires me to try my hand a little more next season… in making some sailing videos. I find his videos enjoyable to watch and I usually pick up a few ideas for camp cruising. I also get a kick out of the accent and vocabulary
  3. Chain saw could cut the hole really quickly. Don didn’t want to use my idea on Avocet.
  4. Jay, I thought Southern Express went to another person just before Messabout. It really is a nice looking boat. Spending some time aboard Southern Express with you guys in 2021 is primary to my decision to snap up Avocet when it popped up for sale… so thank you.
  5. Something like that. Rental of Avocet for winter is $5,300… we decided it’s an even swap.
  6. Nice looking work, Don. Messy, I know, but promising. I just can’t imagine trying to make my long and sort of stiff body do this exacting in-the-cabin work. Fingers crossed.
  7. I found a board stretcher machine that I’ll purchase to add the desired 10” to the centerboard. It’s called the DuhWalt BS 1000 (for “Board Stretcher” I guess.) Just a few passes through the compression rollers will make the centerboard longer to take advantage of the increased trunk length.
  8. Won’t the cushion just squeeze in sufficiently? (I’m sure the cushion can be altered if needed.) Looking good, Don.
  9. Good guidance and coaching goes a long ways. (Thanks, B&B guys!)
  10. Another source of angst!! I thought about that , Chick (you added the above post when I was making this post,) There would likely be be some attention needed from underneath reaching up and into the trunk to the new trunk butt joints of new and old material, plus perhaps some attention from underneath to seal the trunk to bottom planking. An installed centerboard would probably impede that.
  11. I haven’t had a nightmare… but I have thought about this task upon waking up… how the heck to position the board for the pivot pin. I remember doing this on Norma T but I don’t recall the specific process I used, just that it took a while and I decided I didn’t have an interest in doing the process on a regular basis. The advantage of the CS15 pivot pin is that the centerboard “horn” protrudes through the top of the trunk… something to grab onto for manipulation. I managed the task alone. Avocet’s centerboard trunk is closed on top and manipulation is done from… what… underneath?? I assume a second person will be needed. Aaaiiieee.
  12. Thank you, Graham. Likely this is helpful information for my “centerboard-trunk modification technician.”
  13. Yep… I like it. Thanks, Don. (It surely is NOT a job I’d take on.)
  14. From Amazon… what I put on my ski boat. I wanted the bolts to go all the way through the stem without cutting recess space for shorter bolts.
  15. Newman, I must say, your photos look inviting and I did think about the Marissa build before I started on my ski-boat build in 2021. But, my desire for the old style low-to-the-water Stiletto (that I wanted to build since the 1960’s… and I bought the plans in about 1982) simply won out. (At least I built it with wood and epoxy I purchased from B&B. ) The Marissa is probably a much more capable boat than mine, especially in bigger water… but I’m really enjoying the feeling of sitting right on the water in my now completed boat. It has a kind of a sports-car feel in its handling. Enjoy the build. Enjoy day-dreaming about using it when done. I look forward to more photos and updates on your progress.
  16. Aaaaiiieeeeeeeee!!!!!!! WHAT HAVE YOU DONE!!!!!????!! Yep, everything looks according to plan and some plywood is on the way.

  18. John Hager wrote: For over 50 years, Betsey, my wife, and I have canoed numerous bodies of water. They have ranged from white water, like the Wolf, Peshtigo, and Bois Brule to more quiet bodies of water like Lake of the Woods, Sylvania, BWCA, and the over 25 years tripping the Quetico. One of the more serious situations we ran into when paddling, is when the wind is blowing and an island splits the wind into two wind trains. When they meet again at the downwind side of the island, they form an area of confused water with waves crisscrossing from two different directions. We experienced this same situation while sailing on Lake Superior in the Apostles Islands but on a much larger scale. The day before we departed from Sand Island there was a strong storm to our west. The morning of our leaving Sand Island a fairly stiff wind was blowing out of SSE. With the wind at our stern, I thought it would be an easy run to the north point of York Island. I opted not to go south of York Island due to the rocky shoals and shallow water. When we left Sand, the motor sailing was fine. It wasn’t until we were not quite halfway to York, that conditions became concerning. The swells were rolling in from the open waters to our west and another set of waves coming from the south, The meeting of these two wave trains crisscrossing each other made for our most serious sailing situation to date. When we were in the trough of a wave, we could not see land and when we were on top of a crest, we would look down into 5’ or 6’ depressions, larger across than our 22’ sailboat. One wave would hit us on the port side and the next one on our stern. It was truly a white knuckle time, as both of us were gripping tightly, me on the tiller, Betsey on my arm. We don’t remember exactly how long this passage took, our guess is over an hour to motor just under 3 miles. It is never a good sign when one's motor comes out of the water or when the water comes over your bow or both! We love our Catalina C22! Note: What we should have done was turn back to Sand Island, even if it was a longer distance and pay closer attention to wind forecasters, like the app, “Predictwind”.
  19. I would prefer having a spreader/rounded/boxy tent approach to avoid a narrow inverted V shape. My imagination comes up with various ways to do this but I’ve not managed to conceive actual details on HOW that could be done. It’ll be an “ongoing theoretical problem” for my brain to play with. Steve, do I recall that your son came up with a tarp approach with two flexible poles going between the opposite corners for your CS20.3? I thought I saw something like that for shade and some protection for sleeping on the cockpit seats. I just learned that a friend (I did his wedding and his wife worked with my wife) is retiring from the local police force and wishes to expand a side business of his: making custom boat covers. I guess he enjoys solving the challenges of making two dimension material work effectively in three dimensional purposes. It might be fun for me to hire him for a tent project for Core Sounds. I like what I have come up with so far but I enjoy at least imagining other solutions.
  20. A Tent for a Core Sound 17 This boat was beautifully built by a guy in Michigan and sold to a Florida person who has created a tent. I hope to see it some day, at least more photos and maybe a video of putting it in place.
  21. My friend put one of my boats in the water yesterday for some easy sailing. He lives near Asheville, North Carolina. He is stabling, feeding, and exercising Avocet. He is also making some some alterations and improvements while he has it. He is about to start a project to extend the centerboard trunk forward by ten inches to move the centerboard forward. Whew!!
  22. Some Thoughts for next season One thing I would like to do next season is to try out various Wisconsin lakes and to do some overnight “cruises”. Overnight — One night or so? Some of these ventures might be planned a ways ahead of time… but weather is always a total unknown when planning well before the event. Perhaps some these little events could be close to spontaneous on occasion. Maybe that means an email like: ”I will do an overnight on Pentenwell Lake on ?? (tomorrow … or a couple days), launching at ?? landing at ?? (time). Weather looks good. Anyone wish to join in?” Day Sailing Retired folks have the advantage of more open schedules that could allow for spontaneous day sailing the next day or so… or later in the day with a morning notice. Could we figure out a way to send open invites through email? I s’pose, for instance, I could get some email addresses from club-wide emails. Maybe a “group” mailing for those interested in receiving spontaneous or short notice “events” could work. Kinda musing here. Sail With the Lake Wisota Club I’ve initiated some communication with the Sailing Club on Lake Wisota north of Eau Claire. It’s a friendly bunch of people with a full array of boat types. I think they do some racing on Saturdays., and perhaps we could join them once or twice. It’s a two hour drive from here and do-able for a day trip, or camping overnight on one’s boat or somewhere else on the Friday before. Some Places I Think Could Be Interesting (for a Day Sail or an Overnight) Lake Winnebago Trout Lake near (Boulder Junction) Petenwell Lake Castle Rock Lake Lake Mendota Lake Nokomis (Tomahawk) Lake Kishkonong (Fort Atkinson) Geneva Lake Lake Pepin Shawano Lake AND, of course, Lake DuBay
  23. Dennis sent this email to members. A link to a Survey Monkey (5 questions) is at the bottom of his note. Thanks for doing this, Dennis. We might be able to post the survey information in a post below. Also, you may add posts to this thread with thoughts for next year’s sailing season. I still haven’t posted a “how to” thread to this post. Soon? Ted Johanson (PadrePoint) __________________________________________ We are getting to that time of year when we set up the club calendar for next season. Please take a few minutes to fill out the survey below and let us know what kind of events you would like to see on the calendar for this season. There are only 5 questions, and there are no wrong answers. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/KTP95PF Thank you in advance for your input. Dennis
