  1. Followed your suggestion and replaced the pictures; let me know if you see any problems.
  2. Thank you for the information; I appreciate the education I'm receiving here on the forum. I'll use the 12 strand for the first part of the centerboard line. Should I use braided 12 strand for the remainder of the uphaul line and the rudder up/down hauls?
  3. Sorry for the dumb question, but I have very little sailing experience. Would this be good line for the rudder uphaul, downhaul and centerboard uphaul? What diameter is recommended? http://www.duckworksbbs.com/line/spectra/12s/index.htm
  4. I switched photo hosting sites. I was using Photobucket, but I haven't been able to log into my account for a month now (I'm not the only one, Photobucket has a huge log-in problem). I'm now using Google Photos but I must be doing it wrong (it shows up fine for me, but that's probably because I'm signed into my Google account). Thanks for letting me know, I'll figure something out.
  5. I need to lift those weights more often Jay; my arms and legs are skinny and weak! I probably won't finish the boat in time for the Messabout. Working with my kids really slows me down at times . . . . . . but it is worth it when I see a smile like this.
  6. I glued in the starboard seat top, using a "freezer bag with the corner cut off" method which worked well.
  7. Two coats on; one more to go. Very impressed with this Devthane 379.
  8. I'm getting ready to paint the storage area just aft of the bunks. It will be easier to paint this area now before I put the cockpit seat tops on. I'm using Devthane 379 ( a two part urethane paint). I tested the paint on some epoxied scrap wood. It went on well and cured hard. I have some questions concerning applying multiple coats of this type of paint. What is the overall process? The manufacturers instructions are severely lacking. Here what I know so far: Step 1: Clean the epoxy with water to remove any blush. Sand the epoxy to 80 grit. Clean with alcohol. Step 2: Stir the paint, mix using the correct ratio, and apply a thin coat. Tip off using a foam brush. Step 3: ???? What conditions do I have to meet to apply the next coat? Do I need to sand between coats? The manufacturer's instructions imply that you do not have to if applying the next coat within 24 hours. Is it similar to epoxy in that if you apply the next coat before the first completely cures sanding is not necessary? If you do sand between coats, what grit would you recommend? 320 grit was recommended online, but that seems like too high of a grit. Is the purpose of sanding between coats to smooth out imperfections, provide "teeth" for better adhesion, or both? Is it necessary to stir both part A and B? I've been thoroughly stirring both parts, but it seems like the small can (the catalyst) doesn't need stirring.
  9. Yep, it's hard to beat the price and weight combination.
  10. I love the piece of wood you picked for the breasthook; the grain flows nicely to match the shape.
  11. This is the motor mounted. I bought the 2.5 HP Suzuki that Don Silsbee recommends . I forgot to mention earlier that when I made the mount, I copied the angle Pete had annotated on one of the pictures of his motor mount. It was spot on; the motor shaft is vertical (thanks Pete!). The motor just barely cleares the bottom of the hull when rotated.
  12. I've been working on the motor mount and well. My neighbor gave me some Douglas fir; it was very light and easy to shape.
  13. I live about 20 minutes north of Elizabeth City; if you end up moving out here feel free to come by the shop if you want to see a CS20 Mark III build. Here is a link to one of Grahams cruises; it is close to the area you are asking about and will give you a general idea of what it is like sailing in the sounds.
  14. With your engineering skills I'm confident you'll figure out a fix. I'm interested to hear the results of your tests. What did you use to cover over the access holes for the dry storage area aft of the ballast tank?
  15. Welcome George, this is a great forum.
  16. Regarding the cockpit sole, it definitely slopes aft, but I'm not sure how many degrees. My bunk tops are level.
  17. Congratulations on the successful launch; happy to hear the bailers performed well.
  18. Here is a description of a 12 day sailing trip in a small boat leaving from Elizabeth City: http://logofspartina.blogspot.com/2013/12/day-one-performance-for-one.html
  19. I second the call for more pictures; it helps keep us motivated. Congratulations!
  20. Thanks for posting the lesson learned on the fiberglass tube. The sanding party sounds real fun; but I didn't receive my invitation in the mail. It just so happens that I will out of town that day (or week) so unfortunately I won't be able to make it. Congratulations on your daughter being accepted to OCS.
  21. Pretty cool, I'm going to add "seeing an otter" to my list of incentives to get the wife to go sailing with me in the sound.
