  1. Hi Steve, It looks like you have glued the sides of your seats in place. I noticed you have no inspection hatches cut out of the sides and the front bulk head. Do you plan on putting any in or not? If not, you may be surprised how much pressure builds up when the boat is in the sun and out of the water. Alex.
  2. Hi Steve, It depends on what colour you are going to paint it and how much bright work you are going to have. I bought 2 tins of 750ml for the outside and 2 for the inside, which is plenty. I can't remember how much undercoat I bought. I chose to paint everything, purely for a maintenance thing. However, had I had known how beautiful the Gaboon ply looked with a clear coat on, I would have used more clamps and less screws and left some bright work. Maybe on the next boat I'll do that. Alex.
  3. Go the 2 pack poly everytime. It costs more up front but offers much better protection and will last a lot longer. I used Hempel 2 pack poly on my Spindrift 12.
  4. Have you thought of making your own? If you can weld there is nothing too difficult about making your own. If you are able to build a boat, then the trailer should be a piece of cake to make. I have made 5 trailers in the past for various things, 3 of them for boats. I will make my trailer for my Coresound 17 the same way I made the one for my Spindrift 12, nice and light and simple. Have a go and don't be discouraged by what some people may say. I had no problems with compliance for registration in Australia, I don't know what is required in the US.
  5. Hi Jongo42, Looks good. Can't wait to hear your opinion on how well she sails. What did you use for your mast material as this is one of my concerns when I build mine?
  6. Hi Steve, One thing you must remember is that the Spindrift 11 is a small boat. My Spindrift 12 is a great boat but wet. I don't care about it being a wet boat as our weather is beautiful all year round on the Gold Coast, Australia. It also depends on what type of sailor you are. I love to sail on the edge, so therefore I do get quite a bit of water in her, which may make it hard to keep everything dry. With my next boat being the Coresound 17, I wished when I built my Spindrift 12 that the plans included the same hatch style as the Coresounds. I too now look at my side seats and see how much storage there is being wasted, if only I could use to. I will probably make and install Coresound type hatches when the day comes to repaint her. You may need to re=think the design you have chosen for the purpose you are intending to use it for. Maybe one of the Coresounds would better suit your needs. Alex.
  7. Not only is she a beautiful looking boat, she sails as good as she looks. Video coming soon.
  8. I have also used a wide variety of different epoxy over time and much prefer the 2 to 1 with no blush. Also instead of using pumps, I use large syringes which is much quicker and more accurate than pumps. Not only that they are much cheaper as well.
  9. Go the good stuff. I bought Gaboon from Boatcraft Pacific which is a little more expensive but nice and light. Pacific Mapel or Pink Marine is quite cheap and a much better option than Exterior ply. You must remember that this is a small boat with only a handful of sheets of ply and the overall difference in cost will be minimal in the end. Go cheap and you will be kicking yourself later on that you didn't spend the extra $200 or so on the good stuff. I'm on the Gold Coast, where are you located?
  10. Hi Steve, I had the same issue when deciding which rig for my Spindrift 12. I went for the Cat rig and couldn't be happier. Once the boat is off the trailer it's no more than 5 minutes to set up and be off sailing and for de-rigging about 2 minutes. Having sailed on quite a few different boats over time, I love the simplicity of the cat rig. She sails wonderfully.
  11. On my Spindrift 12 the downhaul is attached to the mast step then up through the eyelet in the foot of the sail and down to the cleat as per the plans, so it is impossible for the mast to come out unless you have no pressure on the downhaul.
  12. Hi Ken, I live on the Gold Coast, Queensland. I have tried all the major suppliers on the Gold Coast and in Brisbane and no one can help me. I spoke to Peter from Brisbane and he said that he had his shipped out from the US. Which is why I was thinking of using Laser masts or make wooden masts. I will have a look at the OK dinghy masts and see what I can come up with. Alex.
  13. As always Par, you are such an asset to this forum. Thanks once again for your imput.
  14. I use a Laser mast and sail on my Spindrift 12 and it sails great. I was thinking of using 2 of them on my Coresound 17 once it is built since I can't locate suitable aluminium stock to make a mast as per plans here in Australia and I don't want to go to the expense of getting them from the US. Or I may go wooden masts. Do you think the Laser masts would not be suitable for the Coresound 17? Alex.
  15. Hi Trev, I have now built 6 boats over the years and the first 4 were pre coated full sheets of ply then sanded. The last 2 I listened to the designers and epoxy coated after construction. I will probably pre coat my next boat. It is much easier to coat the flat sheets of ply, you don't get any runs and it is much easier to sand a large flat sheet of plywood. People will talk about primary and secondary bonding. I have had no problems in the past and don't expect to in the future using both methods. Do a test with your ply and the epoxy that you are going to use and see for yourself. I have seen many boats coated after construction has completed and they were left with a heap of runs to then go and sand off. Alex.
  16. Hi Bill, Yes, she is a great looking boat, not because I built it but because Graham designed it. We use a 2.5hp Suzuki 4 stroke for fishing and putting around. She rows quite well with 7 foot 6 inch oars and she sails wonderfully for such a small boat. You will not be disappointed if you build it. I have people come up to me at the boat ramp and ask if she is wood or plastic. They all like the design. Alex.
  17. I second that. Can't watch it as it has been blocked here in Australia as well.
  18. Hi Kirk, I didn't bother to take any photos of the construction at the time. I now wished that I did of course. It does plane under sail and motor and I think it handles the chop fairly well for a boat of this size. If you would like to have a chat sometime, you can email me your phone number or Skype contact and I can give you a call. My email is fune18@yahoo.com. Alex.
  19. Hi thegools, I can pick the boat up by myself so I would say that it is no more than 50 to 60 kilos. You should be able to roof rack it if needed. I made a very light weight trailer for it. You will love this boat. My son and I went out sailing again yesterday and we had an awesome days sail and hopefully we will be out there again tomorrow. I am very happy with the performance of this boat. I used a second hand Laser mast and sail and have now bought a new sail from isail.com for $185 Australian. Whenever I am cleaning or walking past the boat I look at it and think what a great looking boat design it is. I can't wait to start and finish the Coresound 17 to see how well it sails. Alex.
  20. Wow, that is sad that your friends in their 50's have already slipped into observation mode. There is plenty of time observing in your 70's and 80's. While I was at The Australian Wooden Boat Festival in Tasmania earlier this year I met a couple who know a crazy Russian guy who sailed around the world in a 15ft dinghy a couple of years ago and then went and did it all over again in a 12ft dinghy. He is next planning to do it again in a 10ft dinghy. Now that is crazy. I don't know the design of the boats but they must be pretty seaworthy. As they say the smaller the boat the bigger the adventure. Good luck and get out there and live. Alex.
  21. Hi Paul, Have a go. If you are patient and are able to walk away and have a break when feeling frustrated and not flip out like my brother does, it should be no problem. It doesn't matter how big the project is, you just break it up into lots of little pieces and it shouldn't matter if it's an 8 footer or a 50 footer. I have built 5 boats in the past and my next one is the Coresound 17. I am amazed at how many people are amazed that a home handyman can build such a beautiful boat with all the nice curved bits of timber and so on. It is not difficult as long as you can read and understand the plans, take your time and it should not be too difficult. Alex.
  22. On my Spindrift 12 I had no problems at all. All I can think of is that it may be the type of plywood that you are using or the weight of the tape you are using since you say that the measurements are correct. Sorry that's all I can think of. Alex.
  23. Hi Rik, Haven't started yet. Busy working on a new business at the moment so I don't have the time to dedicate to boat building at the moment. Hopefully starting sometime in the next year. Will keep you all posted. Alex.
  24. All this talk about foils. I can understand the difference it would make on a Hydrofoil Moth or some other high tech performance boat but on a Coresound 17 do you really think it is going to make such a difference? I would like to know since I too will need to make my foils sometime in the near future. In the past I have used a belt sander for shaping and then finished off with my random orbital sander with good results. At least I thought. I would like to know what others have done and do you really think that you are going to get an extra half knot out of your boat? If so, I'm in. Alex.
  25. Hi Jon, This is exactly why I bought the plans for the Coresound 17. I live on the Gold Coast and first plan to sail out to Moreton Island which is quite a bit further out than the Whitsundays. Later on I do plan to sail the Whitsundays since they are so close to the mainland and you can easily island hop from one to another. Having seen Peter's Coresound 17 there seems to be heaps of space to store stuff and the fact that you can still sail it by yourself fairly easily. You will have to let us all know when you are thinking of heading up there as it would be great to get a few boats together for a cruise or should that be a race around the Whitsundays. Alex.
