  1. I had forgotten about the Palm GPS option until a few days after I purchased a GPS. I was subsequently VERY thankful that I had forgotten - I accidently let my (waterproof) GPS trail behind my kayak for a few minutes. I was horrified when I realized what the strange splashing noise was but it turned out fine. I doubt a Palm unit would have survived.
  2. Your limited experience trumps my complete lack of experience
  3. I've thought in the past about using foam board instead of plywood. The foam would be lighter than the ply but I don't know if the extra glass needed would offset the weight savings. Vacuum bagging would help on that account. I also thought it would be interesting to try making flat foam/glass sheets and then building stitch and glue with the homemade composite.
  4. I haven't read Small Craft Advisor (but I keep intending to because it looks interesting) so I can't really recommend it but maybe someone else here can... http://www.smallcraftadvisor.com/index.html
  5. Sign me up too, Graham. Thanks!
  6. Hey, if you get that car outta there I bet you can fit another boat in...
  7. Back in March I helped a friend build a little boat to putter around in and fish from. Before building the boat I told him to consider using marine ply but since it was a small boat that we wouldn't expend much time building (it took us 20 hours over two weekends) he decided to go the cheap route. As soon as the boat was finished enough for him to sit in he said "you know, I think we should have used marine ply."

    Green

Well let's see - I traded something green for the plans... Something green got the materials for me... I believe the guy at the paint store was happy when I pulled out a bunch of green stuff to give him for the paint... Boats are green because they're made of green stuff. 8) Mine's probably going to be yellow, though. I don't know why, I'm not overly fond of yellow, but that's what it will be.

    BYYB site

Hi Richard, I have some experience writing programs to automatically access SQL data. I might be able to provide a little program that would step through the data in your tables and write it into another database. As far as my skills go don't get your hopes up too high, but I'm willing to take a crack at it if you don't get a better offer. Let me know if you're interested.
  10. It looks like that video was removed from the site. Just out of curiosity - What was it?
  11. Sounds good - I'll bring a couple of handkerchiefs to tie onto the masts... The one real down side of being in the middle of building a boat is thinking about future projects. If I didn't watch myself I'd have 5 or 6 unfinished hulls sitting around and I'd never finish any of them I need to replace my kayak and I'd like a little sidewheeler houseboat that could take me to Montana to see my friends and of course I'd like to cross an ocean some day so I could use a nice sturdy keelboat and I think it would be really cool to have a kite-powered hydrofoiler and then there's the...
  12. In order to further muddle the math I'll toss this in: I used to have a 15' proa with a 27' mast. The mast was keel-stepped but about 25' was above the deck. It was an un-stayed, loose-footed, bermudan cat rig. Maybe you could use your new mast as the mizzen on the world's biggest sharpie-yawl.
  13. I don't have any useful input here but I hadn't seen Eun Mara before and I just wanted to say "Wow. Eun Mara... Wow. Pretty. Um... Wow."
  14. John, The Pirate Alphabet was a comedy bit in a movie by Mike Nesmith of The Monkees. The movie is called "Elephant Parts" - It was made in the 80s and it's basically a bunch of corny sketches with the occasional music video. Unfortunately Mr Nesmith didn't furnish us with a whole alphabet. Mainly just the letters "Arr!", "Aye!", "Oh!" and "Tea?!?" Anyway - Back to the main discussion...

    test

Hmm... Ditdot is not quite an anagram for idiot. Uh oh - I hope I don't sound like a know it all! Hey Oyster - Since you were having trouble with your signature I used my pen to write in your signature (just tying to help) and now ALL the posts are yours. Ya think we better get Frank in on this problem before it spreads?
  16. The problem with watching Oprah all day is eventually she runs down to the magistrate's office and gets a restraining order  I try (and fail) to do ONE THING a weeknight on the boat. If I find myself watching "America's funniest videos" I have something more rewarding to pull me away from the teevee. Once I finish this boat I'll have to go through the agony of picking another project, so why rush? (Oh, wait - I've already got 30 other projects started - But you know what I mean, Right?) Weekends are for either having fun with friends or more extensive work on the boat depending on what's available. I'm building on a screened-in porch so I have to stop building during the interminable North Carolina winters (the Northern folks on this forum just don't know what it's like to have to suffer the torture of TWO WHOLE MONTHS of winter) So Capt Jake - If you're agonizing over the job change, I'll tell you that I HATE it every time I walk out of work to see the sun going down on a beautiful boat-building (or sailing or fishing) day, but as a consolation I get to build my boat slowly enough that the cost of the materials is, well, immaterial. Everything's a trade. I've always either had money or time and I've tried to enjoyed each when I had them.
  17. John, It's been my experience that many boats are welcome here. Ya gotta watch out fer the accent on the pirate-speak though. I can't tell by the way ye type but I think yer meanin Aaarrr! when yer sayin Eeerrr! Now I'll cut yer a little slack on account o my bein a transplant myself but yer gotta polish that accent a bit round some o these blokes or ye might truly find yerself chained to the hulk of a gaffer that started as a scaled up cradle till the epoxy went south in the heat with nuthin but a single sheet of 100 grit betwixt you and the next messabout. So watch yer Aaarrrs and remember ta say "Oh, aye!" when yer offered some TEA. It's the way of the pirate alphabet! Welcome aboard, mate. I hope that the preceeding was as incomprehensible as it was meant to be (and thank you Michael Nesmith for bringing us the pirate alphabet).
  18. Oh, man - To think what I was doing when that photo was taken! Traffic - Ick. I think I recognize that bridge, though. Good memories of last weekend.
  19. Eel sushi = Unagi. Mmmm... Good stuff. It IS cooked, though. The word "Sushi" doesn't mean "raw" - I think it actually translates as something like "vinegared rice" (please correct me if you know better). The meat is incidental. Things like eel and crab are cooked although some meat on sushi is raw (tuna, for example). You people keep making me hungry. I'm off to eat some more wasabi peanuts. And hopefully Saturday evening I'll be dining on FRESH deer heart (ew, gross!) So I still don't know what this thread is about - How do I know when I get off-topic?
  20. Thank you, Mike, for having me down there. I enjoyed the change of pace and the look at the new project. For all you who weren't there, Mr. Oyster and I had a fine sail on a deserted sound. The breeze was blowing 10 knots on the quarter all the way up and all the way back and fish kept jumping not just into the boat but into the pan... Yeah, that's not quite the truth but Mike got to show off his boat's light-wind performance while slaloming through the fishing fleet and a good time was had by all. What a very nice boat! If we had been out on the water just a little while longer I wouldn't have seen that truly spectacular sunset while bombing down highway 70... I still can't believe it's November.
  21. I've got a friend/co-worker who is from NY (Long Island) and recently she was waxing reminiscent about the bounty they used to get from LI Sound - She was talking about the crab, eel, etc that they used to bring home for dinner after a day in the canoe and there were a few rural-raised (North Carolina) locals who were completely disgusted at the thought of eating eel (these folks were raised on chitlins) because it was basically a watersnake. I grossed them out further by extolling the virtues of rattlesnake. Rural or urban - one man's trash is another man's treasure. I'll have another lobster, please. No, Wait! How about some a bit of ostrich? Or a bison steak? Aww, now I'm going to bed hungry...
  22. An update on the paint: I primed another area with Kilz exterior oil-based and after a week or so I did a scratch test with cellophane tape and it passed nicely. The original problem area was left to cure and it seems to have cured nicely below the wrinkles although I haven't done the scratch test on it. I'm going to leave the wrinkles and as the seasons pass and I re-paint they will eventually go away. My boat will get prettier with age. I'm a patient sort of guy when it gets me out of scrubbing with solvent or sanding.
  23. Arr! Thats it. That's all I can stand! See you tomorrow, Oyster. If there's a wind we'll sail - If not we'll take turns at rowing and crushing ice. For the April trip - At the moment I'm leaning towards the Exumas camp-cruise (I need to call those guys) but I'm still looking at Florida and Grenada as possibilites. The beautiful PNW remains on my short list as an AUGUST destination but I'm not sure my constitution is up to the shock of leaving a North Carolina April for a week in the cold...
  24. Well it's not like they don't CLEAN the intestines first! A little lye goes a long way. And as far as tripe goes - In the form of home-made Menudo, tripe is the perfect hangover cure. Yep - I was born and raised in big cities, too.
  25. Wow, I hadn't thought about the pleasures of hypothermia... Maybe I should rethink my trip.
