iPhone, Android and Blackberry users can use Tapatalk (it is now free).

Within the Tapatalk app, search for "messing-about"  and connect.

Note: mobile users visiting messing-about.com on a phone browser will get a one-time notification that an app is available. I can't disable this notification, but they assure me it is a one-time thing only.

  2. One new feature is pretty nice; a typical quote looks like this:

The forum software has been upgraded to the latest version this morning.

You may see some differences in the editor, etc., but all the functionality should be present (plus more). Please ask any questions here.

To split that quote apart and answer each sentence while you are composing a reply, position your cursor between the lines and press ENTER. The quote splits apart as shown below:

  3. The tabernacle can rotate. It could be mounted in the mast tube just like a mast.

    Just my $.02 worth.

(What ever happened to the cents sign?)

Use ALT-0162 or ALT-155 to get this sign: ¢

You have to use the keypad numbers, not the top row numbers above the QWERTY keys.

(How sad is it that I'm only able to answer questions about computers now? I really need to get back in the boat!)

  4. Try it now ... there's a setting to override the "mailbox full" message, which I just did for Members. I need to find where the settings are for how many PMs you can have ....

  5. Yeah, I had a friend who admitted to me that he was really into the Disney heroines. It was one of those awkward moments when everything just fell silent, and then someone changed the subject.

I just took a look at your blog ... I hadn't noticed it before. I love the Cooper Jr. design, and if I had the money or time, I would build a boat like that. Massive commitment, though!

  6. Yeah, I think everyone here is pretty level headed. We had another case where someone complained about a guy's picture of his family (his wife was in a bathing suit along with his two kids, completely innocent and more like a Norman Rockwell illustration than something objectionable). Sometimes I think people are looking for things to get upset about.

  7. Recently, someone contacted me about a profile picture featuring a nice looking woman. It is not a nude, nor is it racy, but a classic 1940's style pose. It is less racy than Disney depictions of Esmerlda in the Hunchback movie, or Ariel in The Little Mermaid.

After I said the profile picture would be allowed, the person continued to argue that I could not judge the issue since I was a man. I guess the fact that I have a penis somehow affected my view of the issue. I find that an incredibly sexist attitude. My decision stands, penis or not.

The fact is that I am the sole arbiter of what appears on the forum. I believe in free expression, but do limit the content to what is suitable for family viewing. I don't care what political persuasion, religion, philosophy or special interest you have, or if your profile, linked Facebook page, etc. has content I don't agree with ... as long as it is suitable for family viewing and not illegal, it is probably fine. I do reserve the right to limit content at my sole discretion because this is my forum, and I am ultimately responsible for it (US law, the laws of Colorado, and the laws of California do apply to me as a site owner/operator). This forum has been around since 2000 with the same rules, so I must be doing something right.

Because the person said they had already started contacting the other member, I banned them. I simply won't allow my members to be haraunged or pestered by another member. If you can't "be nice", then go away. I will help you on your journey.

If you receive an email protesting your profile, linked Facebook page, etc., refer them to me. Don't be intimidated by the over-sensitive, true-believers or otherwise intolerant folks among us. They are entitled to their opinion, but not to enforcing their views on everyone else.

  8. Thanks, you sound a bit better too. And FWIW I have not missed anything that I knew about. Of course thats not saying much anyway.

Things are better on the personal front; the business is doing well (if "well" is the right word for working harder for about half the pay!) But at least I'm building for the future again instead of wondering if I can buy a sailboat, anchor it off-shore, and live off the grid.

  9. It's been nearly 3 months, and it is working. No one has complained about the archiving. The software "archives in place" stripping the threads of most database operations. They look exactly the same, except that you can't reply to them. Any thread that needs to be resurrected can be, and I was waiting to see if anyone would request a thread re-opened. If I got a lot of requests, I would back off on the archiving (right now, all threads over six months old are archived.)

And it really did reduce the load on the server.

  10. I'm a bit skeptical that a bolt through the mast will take the forces without beefing up the mast box quite a bit. I suspect you'll end up splitting the 1x lumber used for the mast box right at that bolt hole. Unless you use something like a rectangular 4" steel tube.

In my Weekender, the mast box was larger than the mast with "mast partners" jammed into the deck hole around the mast. The deck was taking the lateral stress, while the bottom and keel were taking the compression forces. The mast box itself didn't do too much other than guide the mast into place. IIRC, the bottom of the mast box had 1x trim that kept the mast bottom from moving around. I think you have to think in terms of both the lateral stress ... forward/aft and port/starboard ... as well as the compression forces.

The beauty of the Weekender rig is that you can fold the mast down with the sail attached, lash it, and be on your way. I was able to launch in about 15 minutes from the time I positioned myself on the dock. With my Potter, I rig in a separate parking lot, and expect to take 45 minutes stepping the mast, bending on the sail, tightening shrouds, etc. I love my Potter, but i use it a lot less than I did the Weekender. If I only have a 4 hour window to go sailing, 1 1/2 hours are taken up rigging and de-rigging. So I would encourage you to somehow keep the easy rigging nature of the rig as the main consideration, and boom height as secondary.

I made my mast a bit taller, but the boom was at the standard height. I'm 5' 10", and never had a problem with the boom being too low.
