I am currently still in the process of building a Spindrift 11n.
I had seen a number of posts stating that a Laser rig can be used in place for of having to build it all.
I have acquired a standard ILCA 7 sized rig and upon putting the mast together it looks very large.
My question is will the S11 be overpowered by the standard laser rig? Would I be best to look to getting a radial rig?
I have seen that people say you can reef the laser sail by rolling a few turns around the mast? Or could I even modify the standard laser sail by sticking a slab reef into it?

Hi all, at the 2018 Messabout, Graham mentioned his design of a 24 foot cat ketch that would be blue water capable. We were instantly interested! Our CS20.3 is a fantastic boat, quite seaworthy, fast, fun and easy to trailer about, but I am a big guy and the cabin of our Southern Express was “kinda tight” for me. We have a blue water boat that I thought would be a maxi-trailerable but after several very expensive moves I realized.......missed my goal.

She will be built in this shop:

I have three shop assistants; this is the oldest one. The goal is to have them help with the build when they can and then teach them how to sail when the boat is finished.

I would add that anyone is welcome to come by the shop if they want to check out the kit. As you probably gathered, I live in Chesapeake, VA. For those that have posted builds and answered questions, I do want to thank you as I have read through all the build threads and have learned much.

My posting might be sporadic as work and life gets in the way but I do plan to keep the build updated with pictures.

As we all do I get an endless string of “sale” emals on boat jewelry. I noticed some discussion on ballast pumps on the Mk3 series, Hodges Marine has the bronze Jabsco wake board pumps on sale, about 1/2 price. This is the pump I installed on my Core Sound 20.3 build quite a while back and it has pumped a lot of water in and out of the ballast tank. Only negative is noise, it howls!

I have just become the proud owner of a Suzuki 2.5hp short shaft motor for my CS20. (Short shaft in hope I could also use it on a Michalak Piccup Pram.) When hung on my old Duckworks tripod mount, the motor can't be raised more than about 45 degrees before it hits the top edge of the transom. (It has 7 inches between the front of the pad and the transom and needs at least 3 inches more just for the skeg to clear the water, and much more to lock it in the raised position.) I think I'd prefer an adjusting (lifting) bracket -- I can picture myself getting in trouble around docks with my lower end sticking way back from the transom -- but nearly all of these these are heavy, made for much bigger motors (or only 2-strokes for some reason) and all are very pricey.

	Any experience or opinions welcome!

As many of you already know, I bought Jay and Carol Knight’s lovely boat from them last November. After a brief cruise in the Everglades last winter, I settled into making a bunch of minor adjustments to her, including renaming her. I liked the name I picked for my CS 17.1 so much, I carried it over, adding a “2”. Her nickname is Two Windy (or Too Windy). As with any 11 year-old boat, there were a few maintenance items, as well as changes for personal preference.

About a month ago, I had a little issue pop up— literally. The hatches on her are built up strips of White Oak. They are gorgeous! But some water seeped into a crack, and buckled a couple of strips on the forward hatch.

I’ve been ruminating over how to attack this. If I took the Rambo approach, I’d replace the entire companionway/hatch system with something similar to many other 20.3’s.

But I like the look of the current design. Besides, right now I want a boat, not a project. I’m going to try repairing it. If it looks ugly, I’ll consider a more extreme course of action this winter. So far, so good!

After I fill the cracks, I’ll apply a barrier of 4 oz glass to this and the aft hatch. That should prevent further intrusion. Stay tuned for the results. It’ll be a week or so, since I have to entertain the doctors for the next week or so.

But I did get to take my “grand-neighbors” out for a sail last week. It was the girl’s first sail, and she loved it.

	To All,

I'm in the process of tarting up Petunia so we can make the run up to Olympia,WA for the Salish 100.

I just called Boat US/Geico to inquire about boat insurance for when she is re-patriated, and I was told that they no longer offer hull insurance to ply/epoxy boats !!! Is this really true, have I been out of the country that long, or did I just get someone having a bad day? I've already had one marina ask me for insurance documents online.

Has anyone else been told anything similar?

	TIA for any info,

I have been reading this forum off and on for several years and have learned quite a bit about boat building and about the boat I wanted to build one day. Now that I am building a 256 I thought I should be obligated to share what I have learned with others, it may not be the best or most expansive knowledge but... this is my experience and maybe when you build yours you can look at my pictures.

Ordered the kit and it was delivered in July to hot and to busy to mess with it to much. Took everything out of the boxes to look at it.

As you read and look, you will see more than one person in the photos and me using the word "we" often; I own a Construction company as my real job, and when I can I work on the boat, but when it rains or we are waiting on material, or a permit ect. WE work on the boat, I dont like sending my guys home, they signed up to work 40 and I try to give it to them, even if its for my own ends. I may not make tons of daily posts but will try to keep ya'll updated when I can,

After watching many hours of Dawn Patrol 2 sail magically with its windvane steering system, I have decided I can't possibly steer the whole time myself in the Texas 200 in June. More importantly, my brother / crewmen agrees and is willing to help install (or fund installation) of Walter the windvane. In the past, I have considered installing Andy the autopilot but a system not needing batteries would be better. Why else do I even have that big boomkin on the back of my boat?!?

Any chance of a kit being sold for Core Sound 17.3? Could I purchase preliminary plans? I know the link at https://bandbyachtdesigns.com/windvane is not quite ready to let me purchase yet.

Finally, I have a ladder on the left of my transom and a motor mount on the right. Do I even have room for the auxiliary rudder and kick up apparatus? How much space is needed?

After building my cabin hull and seeing an empty shed, I got to talking to a fellow that's in the process of working towards retirement and he was looking to get on the water at the end of his career. So I said while I was constantly being sent to my doghouse when being bugged by the bride about honey do projects not getting done I may as well be productive over the winter and build a boat.

This was the first fully cut jig that's now being offered in stages, in my case as the jig gets fine tuned. We will be going with an engine bracket , replacing the engine mounted on the transom and splashwell. I think there can be an alternative option if you wish of a full hull extension I suppose from talking at great length. This will be a slow process and redundant for many that's watched the cold molded process of a hull. But I will add some eyewash slowly on occasions .

I will give a shout out to Ken [Kennessee ] and a lot of positive feedback from his two seasons on the water that helped in the planning stage. This helped in some decision making in the hull tweaking that will make a positive impact in the completed hull layout down the road.

And thanks to Alan and Graham for responding to many questions and listening to us for months on end to get us to this point.

When I first spoke with Graham about my interest in this design I told him I wanted to build using marine plywood construction. Graham said I might want to consider foam core construction. I thought no way I want to stick with a familiar construction method. Over the next few months the idea of foam core construction started to work on me and the next time I spoke with Graham. I asked him what kind of foam core he would recommend.

Graham and Alan had modified the Flinders 234 to accommodate Jay's needs hence the Flinders 246. I sat down with Graham and Alan and we worked out some of my modifications as well as all the changes in tooling necessary to come up with a jig to build the boat using foam core.

There are a few different ways to build using foam core but we settled on covering a male jig with foam core planks and then glassing inside and out.

Hello all, I'm about to start down a long road building a Marissa 18. I got the plans a few weeks ago, the epoxy last week, and just got the plywood delivery. I haven't picked up the glass yet but I have plenty of time before I'm at that stage. I work 12 hour nights so the updates will be slow and not too frequent so bear with me.

A little about my experience: I have built 2 smaller stitch and glue boats, a plywood on frame jonboat, and a plywood pirogue. I've done my share of fiberglass repairs and decked out an aluminum skiff. I also turn saltwater plugs, tie flies, and make bamboo fly rods.

I have a machine shop background and have done everything from framing to masonry, roofing, plumbing, electrical, kind of a jack of all trades. I also have rebuilt a couple of outboards, a handful of car engines and transmissions, and restored a few motorcycles. Basically if it was broken, I fixed it. It has always been more of a necessity than a past time though, that's what this boat is for.

Well, here's the first post. Time to finish cleaning out the barn so I can really get started.

Hey folks, first time poster here.
I live on Vancouver Island and coming from a Crown 34 that I sold in 2014. Miss being on the water but not prepared to deal with the costs involved with a big keelboat again.
Looking to build something in the 17’ - 19’ ft range.
Boats in the running are:

-Pocketship (may be a bit small at 14’ 10”)

	- Devlin Eider 17 (having a hard time finding interior pics to assess space)

	- Norwalk Island Sharpie 18 (folks who have a Norwalk seem to love them)

	- Core Sound 17 Mk2 (cabin space seems to be much less than the Belhaven 19 but not surprising at 2’ less overall length.

	- Belhaven 19 (from all I’ve read here also a very popular design.)

Use will be day sailing with my wife and some overnight trips but I don’t expect to do long cruises.
My building space is 18’ x 23’ and it’s pretty packed with wood and metal working tools so 19’ is about the largest I could manage I think.

Wondering if folks have any guidance that might help me make my decision.
A highly-specific question maybe one in a thousand here might be able to answer:

My CS20 has a removable mount from Duckworks, a sort of tripod thingy you'd know immediately. (No: I looked and they appear to be extinct.) Long ago and briefly I had an antique 5hp short shaft motor, for the sake of which I installed this mount. Despite the power head being below the top of the transom, I'm pretty sure I had no trouble raising the motor out of the water without the cowling hitting the transom.

Now I want to see if I can get away with buying a new Suzuki 2.5hp short shaft to hang on the same bracket. As I stare at images of this motor on a computer screen, ruler in hand, I can't see how this could work. But I'm hoping someone with the same motor can tell me how much horizontal room the power heat takes up when a Suzuki 2.5hp is raised compared to when it is down. (The inside top edge of the mount hangs 7" away from the transom, so that's all I have to play with.)

In short, should I buy the short shaft Suzuki 2.5 (which could theoretically also be used on my little Michalak pram), or should I remount the bracket 4-5" higher and buy the long shaft?

Not sailed since before Covid, but getting Beatrice Ann back into the water with her new rig this year. I'd always sailed engineless -- not as purist, but just cheapskate. Being a lousy sailor, I've often gotten into kinds of trouble that I'm getting too old to get out of reliably anymore. So I'm counting on a motor to help out. I am no mechanic, so decided to go new. (I briefly owned an antique 5hp that would only start when I didn't need it too badly. I specify light-weight because my Core Sound's stern gets depressed easily. (Therapy hasn't helped.) Cheaper is of course better, as long as motor is reliable, but I do think neutral would be nice to have. I don't know how many horses I need, but surely no more than 4.

	Hi Everyone:

I’m new to posting here on the B & B forums but a long time reader. I live in Holland, Michigan and am currently 5 years into my projected 2 year build of a Belhaven 19 (#69). Funny how time flies!

I am at a point where I’m starting to look for trailers and decided to buy new since I intend to pull her all over the country. In particular, I am leaning toward the EZ Loader brand for it’s configurability but am having trouble getting model recommendations from my local dealer and the manufacturer. As soon as you mention ‘sailboat’ they kind of shut down.

As I was pursuing old posts here looking for any sizing guidance, I came across a picture of Randy Jones’s reinterpretation of Scott Dunsworth’s BH19 hull #3 sitting on, of all things, an EZ Loader trailer!

So Randy, if you are still around, would you mind sharing the model number of your trailer? Or, does anyone have contact info for Randy or have any insights on BH19 trailers?

Hope to see some of you Michiganders out on the water in about 2 years…
