	Frank recently posted a classified for the Weekender he built. He gave Aslan to me, I eventually gave her to my son. He took her to Washington state and returned her to me when he had to move to Texas. Long story short, I'm keeping Aslan. I've found when you try to give away a sailboat all the nut jobs show up. One guy offered to take the boat and any other junk off our hands. For a small fee of course. I'm just not ready to scrap a boat my brother built and that I've had so much fun sailing. If I can ever figure out how to post pictures and such I will let you guys see how bad I let Aslan get. After all it's just plywood and fiberglass, how tough can it be?<img alt=":huh:" data-emoticon="" src="https://messing-about.com/forums/uploads/emoticons/default_huh.png" title=":huh:" />

	Not sailed since before Covid, but getting Beatrice Ann back into the water with her new rig this year.  I'd always sailed engineless -- not as purist, but just cheapskate.  Being a lousy sailor, I've often gotten into kinds of trouble that I'm getting too old to get out of reliably anymore.  So I'm counting on a motor to help out.  I am no mechanic, so decided to go new.  (I briefly owned an antique 5hp that would only start when I didn't need it too badly.  I specified light-weight and 4hp because my Core Sound's stern gets depressed easily.  (Therapy hasn't helped.)  Cheaper is of course better, as long as motor is reliable, but I do think neutral would be nice to have.

	I'm on a new build that been dragging out for way to long but, I am going full steam ahead now. I am attaching some photos of the chines that I am preparing before I glass the hull.In the photos you will see some white spots,shiny spots and areas that I sanded through the fabric trying to get rid of the spots of concern. I will also include photos of the build to this point. Please leave your thoughts on what I should do with these areas and anything else that may concern you. I don't know how to make the photos turn right side up but...

	Hey folks,
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Not sure if this is the right forum to be asking these questions, but I am just trying to do my due diligence with this trip as we got skunked with last year's canoe trip; Lake littered with cottages, over-fished, and rained out by a 100 year storm that flooded the area.
</p>

<p>
	I'm planning a canoe trip in Algonquin Park. We've done a few here but we are trying to hit a new location that is less traveled. Our primary purpose is seclusion with good fishing. We'll be going the first week of August, so Bass is what we are targeting. I've been looking at Lake Madawaska and everything I've been reading about it says the fishing is exceptional in August for Bass. However, the question I have is, is the small river connecting Hay Lake to Madawaska passable in August? It kind of seems like we might get into some soupy situations and get bogged down in mud or low water levels. I want to avoid this as the trip is already pretty long.

	I just purchased plans from stevproj.com. I will be building a weekender. I live in the Philippines and do not have access to 1"x12"x14' material for the keel. Can I use marine plywood and put several coats of fiberglass on it for strength?

	I’m starting a Bieker 24-foot single outrigger powerboat build. Was going to order Raka Resin (<a href="https://duckworks.com/raka-resin-hardener-kits/" rel="external nofollow">https://duckworks.com/raka-resin-hardener-kits/</a>) since I’ve used it before. Maybe I was ignorant to some problems.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Picked up my cut C&amp;C wood yesterday from Bett’s Boats (<a href="https://www.bettsboats.com/" rel="external nofollow">https://www.bettsboats.com/</a>). The C&amp;C manager/cutter there was really encouraging me to use West System for more guaranteed results. Said Raka can blush and they’ve never seen West System do that.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Plan is to glass the hull sections flat with 6-ounce cloth before going 3D and joining them with fillets and glass tape over bulkheads on a strongback.
</p>

<p>
	Anyone run into issues with Raka? Is West System really worth switching to?
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Check out Bett’s Titanium Catamaran build if you haven’t seen it. Welding that thing without cooking it must’ve been a nightmare. <a href="https://www.bettsboats.com/yachts/current/titaniumcat/" rel="external nofollow">https://www.bettsboats.com/yachts/current/titaniumcat/</a>

	Hi Everyone,
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Bob Hicks, the editor of Messing About in Boats magazine (or MAIB for short, no relation to this forum), has generously decided to make MAIB available online, free of charge. If you're not familiar with MAIB, it was a long running magazine that shut down in 2022 after nearly 40 years in business. There's an amazing wealth of information in the back issues, including a long running column by Phil Bolger, as well as articles from people like Jim Michalak, Joe Dobler, Chuck Leinweber and Dave Carnell.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	There are approximately 750 back issues, 500 of which need to be digitized. Chuck Leinweber of Duckworks has started a GoFundMe to cover the digitization costs. Once everything is online the issues will be able to be viewed and downloaded for free from the Phillips Library of the Peabody Essex Museum (https://archive.org/details/pemphillips) as well as the Internet Archive and the Open Library. Additionally, anyone searching WorldCat (the world's largest bibliographic database) will be able to locate the online copies.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	If you would like to help with this wonderful project, please visit the GoFundMe page and make a donation.

	For any Stevenson Project builders, I will be letting the byyb.org domain name expire on Dec. 18, 2024, and the website will go dark.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	There isn't much activity there any longer, and the organization itself is defunct. The photo albums were lost with a server crash several years ago. The website is basically two pages (a main page and the BYYB Constitution) and a link to the forums hosted at TapaTalk.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	If any of you builders want the site to keep it up, please let me know.

	Hi Everyone,
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	This is my first post here. Some years ago Joe Dobler's son in law, Tom Setum, inherited Joe's archive of 300 or so plans. Tom passed away last year, but before he died he donated Joe's plans to a school or maritime museum, most likely in the Pacific Northwest. Unfortunately the name of that institution has been lost, and no one seems to recall where they went, including members of Tom's own family. Duckworks does have 14 plans on their site, but these are copies given to them by Tom and are just a small percentage of the total.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Craig O'D of the Cheap Pages and I and I have been trying and failing to hunt down the location of the plans. We don't have any commercial interest in the plans, we just think it's a shame that the plans are lost at the moment and we are hoping to find them and determine if they are accessible though the institution holding them. We also want to make sure they are not in danger of being discarded, which may be a possibility if they are at a non-maritime school that does not value them. If anyone has any bright ideas please let us know!
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Joe was an aeronautical engineer who worked at North American Aircraft and designed small boats in his spare time. Many of his later boats, from the mid 60's onward are stitch and glue. Bob Hicks of Messing About in Boats magazine says Joe is responsible for introducing stitch and glue construction to the US.  Jacques Mertens-Goossens said Joe was "a real pioneer in hull shapes and building materials" and freely admitted to knocking off Joe's Lissa pulling boat almost verbatim. Thomas Firth Jones built a Dobler 16 and said it was the "best all-around day boat" he'd ever come across.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	I know Tom was originally considering donating the plans to a maritime museum from conversations I had with him at the time. I had encouraged him to donate the plans to Mystic (Tom said they declined) or to give them to duckworks so they could remain accessible, among other things, but I couldn't interest him in any of my ideas. Last time I talked to him he had moved to Bellingham WA and I believe he said he had donated the plans to a school in the area , but I do not recall where (admittedly the school part of this memory may be incorrect). All we really know is the plans moved with him to Bellingham and were then donated somewhere. We did encounter curators at Columbia River Maritime Museum and Puget Sound University that seem to recall talking to Tom. Below is a list of places that Craig and I have contacted so far in our search.

	As many of you may know, I’ve been aching to build another boat.  But the War Department wanted to know which boat I was going to eliminate, to make room for the new one.  THE NERVE!!!
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Then, there was a person who wanted a trimaran, but was not in a position to build it.  “Could anyone build it for me?”
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Long story short, I will satisfy my boatbuilding addiction by building a Seaclipper 16, and this fellow will get a boat that meets his needs.  It’s a win-win!
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	I’ll pick up the plywood and epoxy at the <a href="https://bandbyachtdesigns.com" rel="external nofollow">B&amp;B</a> Messabout, and get cranking.  Fortunately, my bride realizes that I’m happiest when I’m building a boat.  I already have the plans.  This is gonna be “fun”!  Here are some photos of the boat.

	I looking to design, have designed, build, buy or restore a boat. The goal is a ultra efficient boat I can fish off. Some requirements...
</p>

<ul>
	<li>
		Long and narrow (28-38ft long 50"-72" beam)
	</li>
	<li>
		40-50hp inboard diesel
	</li>
	<li>
		Shallow draft (tunnel stern / box keel)
	</li>
</ul>

<p>
	These are my requirements. I have my reasons. If your suggestion is to go wider or go with more power, or that outboards are easier. I have heard these and I appreciate the suggestion, but this is what I want, even if it is a total failure.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Some designs that I have seen that are close are; Atkins Rescue Minor, Atkins Sergeant Faunce, Robbe Berkings "9m Commuter", Lou Codega's 34 Concept, and Pogo 32 Loxo. I believe Phil Bolger and Nigel Irens also had some designs that are close.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	I'm looking for any other designs that I haven't seen yet. Also I'm intersted in any next steps anyone might be willing to offer. I'm trying to be very budget minded with this project, which is why I would rather buy a used boat. Where do I post a wanted ad? If I had to build, who should I contact to design, keeping cost in mind? Epoxy / Plywood or Aluminum for a proof of concept?

	For this reason I decided to do "Stevproject's Vacationer", which I thought could be done on a low budget, shortly without help, and with some modifications.
</p>

<p>
	First: I'll put the engine in a well. Later I will try to make it suitable for the open seas such as Mediterranean, Aegean and Black Sea by adding a V base karina up to. Of course, the cabin will to rise to the point where it would not break the proportions and It's also a bit larger
</p>

<p>
	The project is based on the original plywood, but the plywood prices have flying. For this reason, I decided to make it from solid wood and I preferred to make the material "Laden" because the only material that could be found in this region was pine.
</p>

<p>
	First, I decided to started to improvise the changes I'm going to make on the 1/10 model that the project.

	I have been forced to upgrade the server for messing-about.com due to increasing resource usage. After negotiations the new configuration still results in a 60% increase. I have added Google Ads to help defray the cost.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Several of you have asked about ways to support messing-about.com. There are links in side column on the main index page:
</p>

<ul>
	<li>
		<a href="https://messing-about.com/forums/topic/17698-becoming-a-supporting-member/" rel="">$12 a Year Supporting Member</a> - Member status will be upgraded to Supporting Member and ads will not be shown to you.
	</li>
</ul>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	You can choose to pay by credit card or PayPal after clicking the link. The forms pop-up, so if you don't see them ... turn off your pop up blocker and try again.  Or, if you prefer to keep it casual, you can send money via PayPal to frank@frankhagan.com.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Finally, I want everyone to know that we completely understand if you don't decide to join in the monetary support effort; messing-about has always provided free access to those who qualify simply by virtue of their contributions and ability to "be nice" to everyone else. It is an honor for me to be associated with all of you.

	I have been seriously looking for a used Core Sound. I have several possibilities identified. What should I look for in an older 17? A more recent 17? A Mark III?
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	I have never built a boat, nor owned a wooden boat. My current chariot is a Catalina 18 keel boat but I'm looking to switch to something beachable with low draft, appropriate for the Texas 200 and Everglades Challenge.

	Mucklas Centerboard pivot - or rather the bushing in the trunks wall - has an issue: it leaked until I fixed it last summer from inside the cabin/the bilge. Since then it seems watertight but I fear, there might still be water ingressing into the plywood from inside the trunk. To take care of that, I had to take out the CB which is a nasty job. Only getting it back in is worse.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Now that the board is out anyway, I want to take the opportunity and put a little more lead in it. You might call the thing "swing keel" anyway if you like.
</p>

<p>
	It is made of 4 layers of 12 mm plywood , with the lower parts of the two middle layers being replaced by lead-plates. So the ballast is in the lower third/forth and in between two plywood parts (yes, meanwhile I know that solid wood would be stronger but this is how the designer specified it and it has held up for about 25 years now. Can't be totally wrong).
</p>

<p>
	A few years ago, I sawed out  a chunk in the middle, made a mould from it and cast it in lead. Now, I decided to take out pieces of the outer plywood layers close to the lower end and cast them in lead too to create two more leaden pieces low down. They will weigh something like 4 kgs each. This will give a total of around 65-70 kgs of lead in the CB/swing keel.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The hole on the lower side of the picture is the pivot-hole.

</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Of course, I will glass the whole thing over which should add a good deal of strength  -but then again, I am not quite shure if this is enough. The critical region is where the CB exits the CB-trunk. There is the fulcrum which takes the load and there is the transition from the rectangular part inside the trunk to the NACA-profile.
</p>

<p>
	The board fits snugly into the trunk so there is hardly any room to make it thicker and hence stronger.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Now, finally here's my question: should I rely on the fibreglass for reinforcement (I could take off some of the wood to get in another layer of glass) or should I rather rely on metal ?
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	For the latter, I have an idea: I might router a groove of maybe 20 cm lenghthwise on both sides through this loaded zone around the CB-slot and epoxy in  a threaded rod. This might give a lot of additional strengh.
</p>

<p>
	What do you think??

<p> </p>
<p>The only obituary I can find is this one from one of his publishers:</p>
<p> </p>
<blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote"><div>				<p><img src="http://assets1.bentleypublishers.com/images/authors/stevenson.p.jpg" alt="stevenson.p.jpg"></p>				<p> </p>															Titles by the Author				<ul><li>
<a href="http://www.bentleypublishers.com/product.htm?code=GDDF" rel="external nofollow">Driving Forces</a> </li></ul> Peter Stevenson<p>Born a Navy brat while his father worked at the Pentagon in 1941, Stevenson was whisked away to New Zealand where the family got a ringside seat for the war in the Pacific. He spent his first three years there learning how to walk on the lawns of the Japanese ambassador's house (the Ambassador had taken a quick trip for the duration).</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Back in the States after the war with a bit of an English accent, he and his generation discovered that no toys had been built during the War so they had to make their own, building what they couldn't afford or find on the shelves at any price. Some time later, with his own kids to raise, he found the same situation, and built the toys that appeared in his book The Art Of Making Wooden Toys.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>During this time, Stevenson and his older brothers had become fascinated with the sportscars that the G.I.s were bringing back from England. Stevenson was able to tag along to some of the earliest roadraces on the West Coast where Allards did battle against the big American Cunninghams.</p>
<p> </p>Later, Stevenson did volunteer work at the Briggs Cunningham Automotive Museum where he was able to talk with some of the visiting racing greats like Juan Fangio, Sterling Moss, Reid Railton, and Innes Ireland, as well as interview one of the characters in <a href="http://www.bentleypublishers.com/product.htm?code=gddf" rel="external nofollow">Driving Forces</a>, Rene Dreyfus in New York. At the museum Stevenson was also able to get the cockpit feel and handling characteristics of vintage race cars before they became precious icons.<p> </p>
<p>Stevenson wrote vintage motoring features for national magazines including Road &amp; Track as well as in his book The Greatest Days Of Racing with an introduction by Grand Prix champion Phil Hill.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Stevenson passed away in June of 2012 and is fondly missed by his family, friends and all of us at Bentley Publishers. Link to this obituary: <a href="http://www.bentleypublishers.com/author.htm?id=47" rel="external nofollow">http://www.bentleypublishers.com/author.htm?id=47</a></p>

<p> </p>
<p>I know for many of us, Peter Stevenson introduced us to fair winds and gentle seas, and greatly improved our lives. HIs passing brings me a meloncholy I can't quite explain.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Words never seem enough, but at least they let us know that we are not alone in our feelings. Please feel free to share how a Stevensons Project changed your life, or simply made you happy.</p>

Have rigged and sailed sprit rigs some but never a gunter.  Guidance on available gunter sailing videos, articles, books, etc. appreciated.  Tks, Rick
