  2. thanks guys - Ken I'm going to try the mizzen only idea this week and she how she sails - I have rolled the main in heavy weather before so it is quite doable - and of course the trick is reef early! cheers Davo
  3. G'day folks - I'm thinking about reefing systems for my CS17 #36 - I have luff sleeves. I am planning to participate in a 10 day raid in Tasmania early next year and the organisers require you to be able to reef on the water. I do have the third mast step - but have never used it as the boat can handle just about anything fully rigged - but can't see myself unstopping and stepping masts while on the water. I do recall Rob Blackburn had some sort of zipper system - does anyone have ideas/photos/etc? All assistance welcome Cheers Davo

  5. Gday Digg - I have a 17 that I rebuild and have been sailing for a number of years - lakes, harbours (including Sydney and Jervis bay), blue water when I feel brave enough - very capable boat. I'm in Cobargo, way down on the south coast. I'll let you know if I am coming north anytime with the boat - or come for a drive down south and we can go for a sail. Happy to give any advice from my experiences cheers Davo
  6. Thanks for the replies guys - Graham mentioned that there was a larger rig for the CS17 with more roach - I'm not sure how much sail area I have but probbaly more around the standard 110 or so. Is there no larger sail plan than the 139? Obviously there is a limit to area as boat handling would start to be affected if sail area was too large. Davo
  7. G'day all - was wondering if anyone has the larger "racing" sail plan for their CS17? I'm interested in upgrading to more sail area - so would be keen on any info, pics, feedback on performance, mast specs, etc. Cheers Davo
  8. Gday - yes the photo is an optical illusion - sorry no new rig chnages! What I would do differently would be to: 1. not attempt a gybe in blowy conditions! 2. if i had to gybe - prepare to let off the main fully as we gybed and get the weight up on the rail 3. tie the step-mother in Last sunday for the first time went out to the big wide Tasman sea from Bermagui - I've been out in some bays before but it's all horizon to New Zealand from where I was. Only about 10-15 knots very pleasant except for the swell which made me a bit green around the gills! Started to blow up with a southerly change later in the afternoon but I was nearly back at tghe harbour by then. I felt pretty vulnerable out there - so I was keeping a good eye on the weather and turned back in time. The boat handled everything - it is so bouyant in the bow that it just rides up over swell and waves - had the boat self-steering for long periods heading up into the wind - just tie the tiller ahead, ease the mizzen until she is balanced and make yourself a cup of tea (if i had brought one) Cheers! Gday - thought I would share some reflections on a couple of interesting outings I had recently in my CS17 "Wyvern" #36 went out in blowy conditions - probably gusting up to 30k - the boat went great as always (full sail) with three on board- find that sometimes in gusty conditions the boat won't go through the tack well (think I will have to play with the mizzen a bit more to see if I can stop that) - anyway decided to gybe downwind as the rocky shore was coming up quickly - left the mainsheet on - BIG MISTAKE! came through the gybe and the gust laid us over. I've capsized once before but didn't even get wet that time just walked over the side onto the board and stepped back in as she came up - this time we all went into the water along with fenders, water bottles, shoes, dry bags, etc. The boat steadily and slowly turtled as I knew she would - scrambled onto the hull and my 90kg got her on her side OK but slipped into the water as she rolled so I had to pull myself back onto the board from the water - that board is along way up - good thing I have been doing my push-ups! Got it up fine and back in the boat which was full of water - got Dad back in (will he ever go sailing with me again?) and bailed out - then on to retrieve the step-mother who had floated off in the wind hanging onto several fenders (we all had lifejackets on). Looking up at the wind indicator to check wind direction noticed it was now at a 90 degree angle and the top 3 foot of the sails were black with lake mud. Umm didn't know the lake was so shallow there. Retrieved nearly everything - lost at sea: one water bottle and one thong (the kind you wear on your feet - not underpants!) - not too bad considering - at least we got the (not too wicked) step-mother. Noticed the boat behaving badly on the way back and thought to myself - we took on some water through the fore and aft hatches when we were upside down - yup probably 100L in the forward storage and 50L in the back - an option for water ballast!? I don't have a rubber seal under the hatches but they are tight - I was surprised that we took on so much water through the hatches as the boat floats high even when upside down. Maybe some work on those for next time! Good learning all round. on another note, got the boat planning up-wind - what a hoot! Cheers and good sailing Davo

  12. thanks Gordy - took the CS17 out on the weekend and had some fun racing against dinghies and trailer sailers - a bit more wind and i reakon i would have been up there! cheers Davo
  13. Gday Mike - Long story, here goes .... I bought the boat from the guy who build it (it was probably 2-3 years old) - sailed it for a season and had trouble with the boats balance in mod-heavy winds (I couldnt stop it rounding up in gusts - extreame weather helm!). Anyway I got hold of some of the building measurements and realised he had put the centre board a good 9 inches too far forward! :shock: Which of course changes the whole centre of effort of the boat. He had changed the mizzen mast thwart and step into some craxy box and bolt affair (I guess he thought the original design wasn't beefy enough) and this forced him to push the centrecase forward. I guess he didn't think it would matter? :???: Anyway - I bit the bullet and decided to shift it back to it's rightful place - I was just going to do a cut and paste job - but the further I went, the more shoddy workmanship I found, which made me go further and the more shoddy .... (etc -you get the picture). This included dry rot in the seats, dry and chalky seat joins, rusting fasteners, no profiles on the centreboard and rudder, etc. So ... these issues along with my tendency for perfectionisim and an understanding (mostly) wife led me to basicaly rip out all the internal structure (except for the seat sides aft of the thwart), sand back to bare timber, rebuild seats, thwart and centreboard case with new timber, epoxy coat and paint throughout, sand back and paint the hull and topsides, profile the centreboard and rudder blade, fit new running gear to original specs, new marine grade bottom mast sections (bent the other cheapo ones)....good fun and lots of learning! (I probably could have build 2 boats from scratch in the same time! ) Anyway Im back on the water now and she goes like a dream - just the way the designer intended. Morals of the story? .... don't stuff around with good design and buyer beware! cheers Davo

Gday all - I want to do a bit more racing with my CS17 and am finding that the race organisers want to know the handicap of the boat - has anyone had a racing handicap worked out - I can do it here in Australia but its a bit of a job to have it worked out by Yachting Australia. Any leads greatfully received. If someone has had it worked out in the US maybe you could include the handicaps of some other classes so I can compare the US system to the OZ system and work it out from there. BTW Im back on the water after a major (3 year!) rebuild of the boat and enjoying some summer/early Autumn sailing - great! Thanks and good building/sailing/dreaming Davo
