  1. I used the 55# Minn Kota on my weekender and it works great! I replaced the shaft from the motor with a short solid mounting near the side of the keel. The control from the head was reworked into a dial switch in the cockpit that gives me total control. Just steer with the rudder. The motor has taken me across the lake. It makes people crazy to see the little boat jockeying around at the boat ramp under its' "mystery" power.
  2. I love this kind of thinking! Looks like a fun project.
  3. We are lucky to have a variety of small lakes and reservoirs and Lake Erie all within a few hours drive. Our first launch was at a local pond where I slipped away and backed the trailer down the ramp, let out some line on the winch and stood on the shore with a local fisherman for 15 minutes to see if the thing floated. That being successful, we did more than a dozen "shake downs" on local reservoirs to tweek things and play with goodies like roller furling and auxiliary power. Pretty much anything will work on a calm day. Sandusky Bay gave us the opportunity to push the boat to the upper limits we expect to see. Even after the wind clocked around and piped up on us the boat performed perfect. One of the most enjoyable sails I've had in quite some time. By design the boat is very stable and responsive and a joy to sail. The weekender is a fun project and a great little boat to sail and it really turns some heads at the ramp and on the water!
  4. Thanks. We were fortunate to have a great weather window, experienced sailors and a chase boat. The boat performed flawlessly. That being said, I wouldn't recommend Lake Erie as a fitting cruising grounds for a weekender (or any boat less than 23'). That lake can turn nasty!
  5. Our little boat finally saw the water this summer! Here are a couple photos from Lake Erie's Sandusky Bay.
  6. I'm not so sure my mast angle is correct. Has anyone ever tapered the front and back sides of the section of the mast within the box and setup a nut and bolt arrangement to allow you to fine tune the mast rake? I am thinking a fixed threaded piece recessed in the mast with a bolt through the box and a lock nut on the outside of the opposite side of the box.
  7. I have a Com-Pac 16 for sale. Comes with a galvanized trailer. This boat is very clean and sail away ready. The main and jib were reconditioned by Sail Care. I also have it listed at http://sbo.sailboatowners.com/index.php?option=com_adsmanager&page=showad&adid=12159&catid=793&Itemid=283. The boat is in my driveway in Prospect, Ohio
  8. The 15 inch wheel actually measures about 15.5. This gives me about 1.75 clearance from the seats. The wheel I had started from the plans was measuring more like 18.5. I will have cockpit cushions and I think I will like the extra clearance. Having never sailed a weekender, I don't expect to notice the loss of leverage in the steering.
  9. Hi John, I'm building a weekender in Prospect, Ohio. About 2 hours south of Sandusky. Glad to hear of someone around here on the same adventure. There is a place just west of Sandusky that has some great plywood. Homestead Hardwoods. I bought my materials in May of 2008 and the 11 sheets of plywood totaled $563 with tax for meranti. Their website is homesteadhardwoods.com. Last year I found steering wheels at nauticaldecorstore.com. Their 15 inch wheel was $24.75 and $10.95 for shipping. Much nicer than the one I was attempting to make. Hope this helps. Best of luck. Rick
  10. Oops! Here's the other photo.
  11. I have seen this idea used before but I don't recall where I found it. Here's what we did on our weekender. Before we put the sides on it seemed like the time to build in a mount for the trolling motor. We mounted a piece of 1.25 square plated tubing with holes about every inch to a 2 x 4 block attached to the back side of the lazarette with a bolt. Where the tubing exits the transom we added a piece of 1 by to beef up the area. The motor mount will be welded to a matching piece of 1 " tubing that will plug into the "hitch" and held in place with a pin. Both square tubes were stock items at the local big box lumber yard. Safe to say my portable grill will also be mounted on a piece of the left over 1" stock and plugged into the hitch when it's time to eat. Could attach the mount for the ski rope, but that might be pushing things. I'll let you know if this actually ends up working.
  12. Now we're making some headway! I picked up some Meranti "Hydrotek" at a little place just west of Sandusky, Ohio, www.homesteadhardwoods.com. Great prices, Great service and plenty in stock within driving range for me in case I need to pick-up a replacement sheet. ;D Thanks Greg and Jim for the advice. I really appreciate this forum and the wealth of information it contains.
  13. My weekender plans shipped from California to Ohio and were on my desk in ONE WEEK!!! GREAT SERVICE! Thanks Guys. Now I just have to figure out how to build a boat. Should be fun to watch!
  14. Thought this deserved it's own thread! I ordered weekender plans with PayPal on Thursday, February 28, 2008 from the Stevensons website. The plans shipped from California by Priority Mail on March 4th. I received my plans and DVD in Ohio today, March 6th. In my hands ONE WEEK from when I placed the order.
