  1. Possibly for sale as a project. Hi all, I was one of the first to build the nimrod 8ish years ago and documented it here. It turned out great and has been a fantastic boat, almost effortless to paddle and very true, strong, and seaworthy. I lived in Minnesota at the time but moved to Florida 4+ years ago. I have enjoyed paddling this craft all over lake superior, (including during a quite rough storm on purpose to really test its abilities with airbags in it, was awesome!) Ive also done a few extended trips on the Mississippi river, as well as some excursions on the ocean and gulf coasts of Florida. With lack of storage space it sat outside in the weather in Florida and i found that it was time to strip it all down and re skin it which i have started on.. Sadly, i have developed some nerve issues that have really limited my paddling days and mostly just go short paddling with my smaller plastic yak these days. With Jeff's permission, i am seeing if there is any interest in someone buying this project from me. Here is where it stands at the moment: It is still straight and true as the day it was built. it is stripped down to the fuselage and hanging in my porch, I have retied some of the sinew but have a little more to do and have the sinew to do it. I also have the new skin material and thread to skin it as well as the following: both the old and new hatchtes the original air bags that were still holding the initial air i put in them four yeas ago(will need new tubes and valves) new deck lashing and stainless deck cleats original steam bent oak coaming, does need some attention my hand made cedar paddle can see that among the build pics both skin boat books signed by Jeff im sure there is more im not thinking of right at the moment. With a little more sinew tying this is ready to skin, put hatches and coaming on, seal coat, then paddle! Great opportunity for someone to skip a lot of time building anyway if anybody is interested you can message me on here and ill give you my# so we can communicate easier. Im located in Lorida Florida which is south central near Lake Placid/Sebring area.

  3. Wow! Almost 8 years since i built the Nimrod. Many happy paddles and life changes since then. I lived in Duluth Minnesota when I built it, but moved to Florida over four years ago. Absolutely love no winters! This boat was a labor of love building it and Ive enjoyed many excursions in it all over Lake Superior up north and off the east coast and gulf coast of Florida. Earlier this year , after four years of Florida heat and sun it was time to reskin the Nimrod, so I stripped it all down to the fuselage, and got all of the stuff to rebuild it. But sadly have not had the time to get it going, and nerve issues in my arm have forced me to stop riding motorcycles and I just don't paddle as much anymore. Considering selling it as a project but unsure just yet. Anyway, just thought id jump back in here after all these years and do a little update.
  4. Jeff, If you ever get up Minnesota way, There is a nice little kayak festival every year in Two Harbors Minnesota up on the north shore of Lake Superior, cant remember the dates off hand, but think it is sometime in august.
  5. I used steam bent oak strips 1/8 inch thick and actually layered mine about an inch thick then used a router to route out the excess on the bottom for the spray skirt lip, and used a round over router bit on the top edges.
  6. Yes, I also found that turning was better with a little leaning and a deeper but quick stroke. This has been my first time using a west greenland paddle, and I now see why they are liked so much, I would not go back to using a european style paddle again after using it.
  7. I dont really see any drawbacks to the coating on the inside, just seems to make it all the more waterproof, though it adds slightly more weight, It sure did stretch tight really well and showed no loosening of the fabric once wet. Initially I thought that the epoxy not turning out smooth and glossy and hardening too fast had something to do with it, but have found out that it was a temperature thing, the basement I built it in never gets over 50 degrees and i found out that at that temp the epoxy was hardening to fast, hence the rougher finish. If I build another one in there I would need to use a space heater to get the temp up.
  8. Hmm, photos didn't upload, will try again. Also absolutely loved the performance of my west greenland paddle.
  9. Sweet! I finally had some time to try out the nimrod! No leaks at all, and paddled like a dream! From what Jeff said about the design I was expecting it to be a little unstable, but I found it to be surprisingly very stable once i got used to it in short order. It tracked extremely well, even in some moderate wind and waves that came up later in the day. Did not turn real easy but thats ok as it benefits the great tracking which I definitely prefer in such a boat. I really couldn't ask for better performance and give very high kudos to the designer, Jeff, I wish you could paddle it so you could see that I believe it would exceed even your expectations. BTW, these pics were right by the shore, and I did have my life jacket on once i went out paddling!
  10. And, no, I have still not had time to try it out hoping for time this weekend. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  11. Sad to hear, I keep a real busy schedule, and I understand about your priorities, but just like JReed said work on it a little here and there. I know for me, the working on a labor of love whenever I can is a great stress reliever. Hope it works out for you. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  12. I kinda dropped off the face of the earth for a bit due to heavy workload and moving, but the nimrod is done. Now just need to find time to try it out. I am not real happy with the finish using Corey's goop, came out kinda rough not smooth and glassy like i hoped, maybe due to the poly coating inside? But it did bond really well and I believe it will be quite watertight. Attached pics but not sure it will work from my phone. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  13. Progress coming much slower then I had hoped for due to other things that needed tending to, But, it will be done soon. First coat of polyurethane on the top of the kayak, looks a little blotchy, but I understand that is normal for the first coat as it soaks into the fabric. also a picture of the cockpit and a closeup of the fabric mounted to the cockpit coaming with the brass nails. The nails actually held a lot better then staples did, but I was only using the staples temporarily to keep the tension on the fabric till it got nailed. I ironed the fabric some, but it was already sewed so tight and without any wrinkles or creases, that the ironing really made no difference. Really hoping to be done prior to next weekend for a water tryout, but will have to see how things go.
  14. Do a little research for online stores/shopping cart/website. and you might be surprised at how cheaply you can get all setup, I believe paypal still has a very affordable complete package, I had one years ago, also ebay has some too that are integrated with paypal checkout. Or you can use any cheap website package like through godaddy or similar and cheaply add a checkout system. And, alot of the systems are so automated that they even send the emails for you, all you have to do is fullfill the order and ship it. BTW, I love the second one from the front in the pic where they are sitting on the wicker love seat
