  1. I have a shad that's made with cypress stringers and 11oz cloth. It's wieight with float bags footrests and seat is 36lbs. it handles the lake wind chop and boat wakes with no problems, it's actually fun on a windy day surfing the chop downwind. don't think you can go wrong with any of these boats.
  2. The Shad I built last winter. Went out yesterday, wind was 15-20 had a bit of chop but the Shad handled it very well.
  3. Looks interesting. Been thinking about building a multi- chine boat next.
  4. Had the stonefly out fishing last weekend, first time using the back band. It worked well, much easier on the back and no problems with it being in the way. It's a permanent addition now.
  5. I like it, but shouldn't it have crossed paddles instead of bones.
  6. Sounds like fun, as long as they sell beer in AL. Would like to see that part of the country and learn a bit more about these boats. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  7. What a PITA! SOF only for me.
  8. Figured that was coming:)
  9. Water has warmed up enough for me to get out and paddle the new boat, since I'm new to kayak paddling I wasn't sure about the stability of the shad. Happy to say it was a non issue and loved every minute of it. It's a very easy boat to get the feel of. Should be a fun summer with this new toy. Unfortunately I forgot to bring a camera both days so no pics of her in action, maybe next week. Was a fun build of a great design and now a great boat, thanks Jeff.
  10. The place I bought wood for stringers was able to plane it to 5/8 for me, made life easy.
  11. Good info, thanks. What size did you buy and how's the fit on the shad coaming?
  12. That's the way I have purchased baltic birch plywood for two boats. Works good for frames, I did laminated coaming so not sure how that would work out. I found it in 5/8 in locally in a couple of cabinet shops but they weren't interested in ordering 1/2 in for me. Too lazy to drive 4 hours to pick some up in the city.
  13. It worked ok, had to be very selective with grain. Was surprised how well using a heat gun worked to soften the wood. One thing that might have helped was that this cedar itsnt kiln dried. Haven't used it yet to see how it's going to hold up long term, waiting for the water to warm up a bit.
  14. Tried out using a kayak back band on the canoe today. It' made paddling it a lot more comfortable but not sure if it will be a permanent change I'll give it a few trips and see.
  15. It was a bit of work but came out ok. Ignorance is bliss
