New laminated coamings

Kudzu

Recommended Posts

Been a while since I made one. My old jig is AWOL and I decided it was time to make new one to match the new style coaming anyway.  Changed my methods and invested in a new clamp to solve some issues I was having.  First one came off the mold today.

Cleaned it with my scrub plane, sanded it and then started adding the lip. Been a busy week so I called it quits and will finish this up Monday... maybe.

Soaking wood to bend it doesn't really help much, heat is what allows wood to bend.  Steam is used because it will only get so hot and will never burn the wood as hot air could. It is really not the moisture but the heat that loosens up the wood. Now green (wet) wood will bend much better than dry wood and I think that is part of why people want to soak the wood and then heat it, but it not necessary. I just use a heat gun, no water, no soaking, etc. Just get it hot and will relax and bend around the form nicely.

Not all woods heat bend wel, I use Maple because it does and I can always get it.  Red oak should work well too but neither of this have great rot resistance so will you need to seal with paint or varnish and keep them dry when stored.
