Painting 11.7 oz fabric

(I spit this from another thread to make it more visable- Jeff)

I have received the fabric I ordered from you which was sent to Tasmania Australia.   It certainly looks good!

I have sourced an Australian water based flexible paint made by Viponds Australia called TautFlex which I believe will be suitable.

The supplier said to me I should ascertain whether the fabric has been treated with a water repellent because it would cause problems if it has been.

Can you kindly advise me on this aspect?

I only sale uncoated fabrics. No coating is what makes it so hard to find. There are lots of coated fabrics out there and  I talked to quite a few Mills trying to find a suitable fabic.  So no fears there, the only thing on my fabic might be a bit of saw dust. ;)

I looked up the paint and read this "TautFlex is a waterbased paint that was developed to paint flexible vinyl surfaces in the sign industry."  Your not painting vinyl so that makes me a little suspicious. And I am assuming this being a speciallty paint that this it costs more.

The main reason I sell polyester is that is that most anything will stick to polyester. Regular house paint works just fine. There is no need to spend a lot more money on some special coating. I painted my Sling Shot with a latex house paint on the 11.7 oz fabric and it still looks good. I have painted and paddles several boats and I have never had paint of any kind crack or flake off.

Your money, your choice, but I see no reason to spend extra on a specialty paint when standard house paints work just fine. Just use a gloss finish! It is tougher and sells seals better.

Hobartian, I have been in contact with a guy who makes Skin On Frames in Tassie, he calls himself Canoes and Lampshades. He uses Arcylic Floor Polyurethane on his skin on frames, so I did that with my canoe. I did however apply 10 coats! and used maybe 3 litres of the 4 litre tin. I used cabbots satin floor polyurethane, my next project I am on now I plan to use an oil based marine grade varnish.

I did also email this guy about AQUACOTE and this was his response:

Good Morning Lisa,

We have had a few people use AQUACOTE Topcoat for skin on frame kayaks.  I even had one bloke use yellow as it was the only way he could calm his wife down to enable him to go offshore.

It does 10m2 per litre per coat.  You may have to apply 5 or 6 coats and you can apply your next coat within a couple of hours and no sanding between coats.  Wash out in water and no solvents to worry about.

$85.00 per Litre. 2 Ltrs - $159.00.  Work out your square metreage and go from there.   I would say somewhere between 1 & 2 Litres.

Regards,
