Van Oosal
Gday. I have been sailing a Cherry16 on Port Phillip. I notice the weight/drag etc on the transom with a 5.0 hp outboard. I was thinking that I could routinely carry the outboard in the cabin to bring weight forward but this would mean a lot of hassle and also tlack of instant availability if needed. I wonder about the weight/power benefits of a small inboard engine or electric motor located in the hull just forward of the mast. A secondary question would be whether it is possible to have a slide on the transom to raise/ lower the drive for sailing. cheers Bill
Hirilonde
I suggest a smaller outboard on an adjustable bracket. We have people in this forum pushing 6 meter boats with 2.3 hp outboards and hitting hull speed. As to the "need" for instant availability I would say that if you are relying on an outboard to get you out of trouble you got into sailing you have put your "faith" in a dangerous place. Ken_Potts
I always thought my 2hp Honda outboard was oversized for my Core Sound 17 (well really, I thought the prop was undersized, but that's a different story). Last I heard the same motor was still serving faithfully on a CS20. I think the power of one oarsman would serve nicely for a boat of this size - .25hp? (or two oars). The Cherry 16 looks like a similarly lightweight trailer sailor so I'd say it's worth trying a pair of oars or the absolutely lightest outboard available. I wonder what a Seagull weighs...
