GaryMinor
Folks, I have a new pair of standard adjustable foot rest from KudzuCraft. They are well done and I'm looking forward to using them. How far from the back of the seat do I place them? The tallest person using my Mess About is 6'1". The foot rest will be placed so that the extreme furthest adjustment will fit him. Since the range of adjustment is about 10", the extreme closest adjustment would fit a 4'6" person. Anyone shorter than that would have to have the seat position adjusted. How far from the bottom should they be placed? Thanks, Gary in Wake forest
Hirilonde
I hung mine from the bottom of the gunwale stringers using Jeff's brackets. You will find they fit between the frame at the forward end of the cockpit and the frame forward of that one. In this location it should adjust to fit just about anyone. If you have doubts just climb into the frame out on the lawn and note where your feet end up. Then see if that location I mention works for you. I can virtually guarantee that it does, but peace of mind might make the test worth doing.
labrat
How far from the bottom should they be placed? It's a matter of personal preference but I think most people (including me) tend to put them at a height that allows the balls of the feet to rest on them. This photo shows the mounting brackets I used. They are simply rectangles of stainless steel sheet. The footrests are quite close to the deck skin. These are the footrests I bought from Jeff close to 2 years ago, presumably he still sells the same or similar. As far as fore/aft positioning goes, I sat against a wall with legs outstretched and measured the distance from wall to bottom of feet. Centre of the footrest track was then located this distance from the seat back. This is safer than a recommendation based on height.
Hirilonde
This is safer than a recommendation based on height. Using height for anything can be very inaccurate, be it foot peg location or dimensions of paddles. The human body comes in many different proportions for any given height. And in the cases of both foot pegs and paddles the boat dimensions play a part as well. When it comes to foot peg location Jeff has pretty much done it for you with his designs and the foot pegs he sells.
Kudzu
Forward and back location is set by the frames. There isn't much room to move them. On my Cast Away which is a modified Mess About I mounted them on the lower stringer and I don't remember why but I am sure it was because it fit better. But all my others I put them on the gunwale
