sargentjj Posted November 13, 2013 Report Share Posted November 13, 2013 I just draped the recycled poly fabric over my Vardo and the lashings create bumps in the skin. I created groves for the lashing on the keel to hide the lashing but not on the gunnels. Is this normal for a skin boat and I'm just being too picky? Will the bumps be hidden by the paint/finish? I only used an arms length of sinew for each lash and wrapped 5 or 6 times, was this to much? Just looking for suggestions before I cut all the lashings and start over. Hirilonde Posted November 13, 2013 Report Share Posted November 13, 2013 I did the same as you did. No, the bumps do not go away due to painting, they don't go away at all. The keel is the only stringer that really gets any abrasion, so it is the only one that really needs the lashing let in. It is also the least tortured (bent, sprung, loaded) of the stringers and is therefore the least prone to breaking because of the notches. You probably could get away with notching all the lashing points, but it weakens the boat. Weakens it too much? Dunno. Want to take a chance? Your decision. The bumps don't bother me. They are the result of the building methods and add character IMO. I think people get too hung up on details like this and on the supposed beauty of gloss paint. But this is me. BobV Posted November 14, 2013 Report Share Posted November 14, 2013 I built a lashed steam bent rib and stringer canoe, I have a lot a bumps. Which looks fine, in fact the lashing really stands out because the wax from the sinew penetrated the polyester and since I used a clear poly finish the brown wax shows through. On my current project, a Tom Yost Sea Rider, I slightly over sized the the chines and gunwales and filed grooves for all the lashings. I really didn't want to have to cut the lashings off and start over. I didn't see similar bumps on Kudzu's boats (photos don't show the bumps) so I was worried I screwed up. Building these boats is addictive, I originally planned the Vardo as a Winter project. I'm almost done and Winter hasn't even started yet. I may have to build another for the wife.
