NY_Rocking_Chairs
So here it is to this point. I finished getting it all sewn up and heat-shrank tonight. I ended up using the heat-gun method but kept my IR thermometer handy so I could monitor the skin temp until I got a feel for how much heat gunning it took... Picked up the paint this afternoon so hopefully start on that tomorrow...will be black bottom and a green top with white accents. I picked up Rustoleum Quarts and plan to lighten the Hunter Green slightly with some white to get the desired shade. Frames are baltic birch plywood, gunwales and stringers are WRC. Skin is the 12oz polyester from Jeff which was exceedingly easy to work with, especially doing the corded stitch on the bow and stern. Coaming is made from Mahogany that came from somewhere out of that pile of wood in the back-ground. I tried to keep it a secret xmas present surprise for my wife, I even had our 5-year old sworn to secrecy, til she "accidently" walked down while I was working on it tonight...she knew she wasn't supposed to come down there while I was working, but claims she forgot Oh well, the paddle is still a surprise. All lashed up: Required Frame On Grass Photos: Coaming all finished: Ready to skin (the bungee was just holding it in place until I could ratchet strap it down): Bow all stitched up: Everything stitched up and heat-shrunk: Coaming final, though still some excess fabric to clean-up and get out of there:

kayak278
Looks great! Your wife will love it. I just finished a 10 footer for my 3 yr old son.....now I just have to make one for my wife so she won't be the only one in the family paddling a plastic kayak!
