ZANE the BRA1N
Hi everyone, I just wanted to create this forum topic to keep a record of my longshot build and use it to ask any questions I have. I just received my frames from Jeff today along with the skin. I have two questions: -is it okay if there are a few small imperfections in the polyester skin? -In the reference drawing in the back of the assembly manual it shows an 8'2" frame. I did not get this frame, but a different one that says 9'1" on it. Which measurement should I use?
Kudzu
Be more specific on the small imperfections in the fabric. If there is a problem with the fabric I will make it good. Just tell/show us exactly your talking about. I will get back to you on the frames, I am not in the my office. I am not aware of a problem with that boat on the frame numbering. I think I know what is going on but I need to look at the manual and plans. FOLLOW UP: No mistakes, use them as they are marked. I sent you email too. ZANE the BRA1N
Here's a picture of the fabric. after looking closer, it just looks like a few slightly loose threads. I'm not sure if they matter, just making sure.
Kudzu
That is normal, those .... whatever they are, are always present in the roll. I don't even notice them anymore . Once it is on the boat and finished it will never show. I looked again and the weave is very loose on this fabric, so that may be where the fabric has been pushed around. If so I have found that you run your finger back and forth and even it out many times. But, I wouldn't do that till it was on the boat. It's not uncommon to 'pick' small spots in the skin when your working with it. So if it is still there once the skin is shrunk you might rub on the fabric and even out the weave. ZANE the BRA1N
I just finished my frame today. I was very happy at how sturdy and light it was when I removed it from the strongback. I'll hopefully have the skin on by the end of next weekend.

benhardt57
Hi, I'm new here and didn't want to start a new topic. But this is a Long Shot thread so I guess it's OK to post here. I am in the process of selecting a kayak to build, and I like the Long Shot except for one thing, the T-shaped section at the tail end. It looks cool, but when I think back on my experiences covering RC airplanes, that looks like a really tough area. Has anyone built one of these with the stringers running back closer to the trailing edge and/or reduce the width of the horizontal member at the back end of the rear deck? And if done that way, how much would it affect the performance of the kayak if any? Thanks, Ben
Hirilonde
I have a Curlew which has the same stern detail. I don't think having the "T" as you call it effects anything other than looks and maybe to add a tad of volume a little forward of the stern, and it may not even do that. It does not effect the hull shape at the water line. I can tell you that getting the skin to cover it nicely isn't a problem at all.
P Doug (WA)
I agree with Dave and I use to be a RC airplane builder and believe me this was much easier to cover. I guess it was because it was bigger and different material. You will see it is not a problem.
