Building a day hatch

I thought it handy to have extra storage within paddling reach on my latest build..
I had planed to skin the lid....

What holds the lid on?  Does it have some kind of gasket?

I was thinking of using  peel and stick foam .....and attaching a bungee to the underside of the lid.

The finish is Burnt Sienna Pigment mixed with a satin urathaine....
