hellmansam
Details are sketchy at this time - word around town is that a boat sank yesterday. According to the NT News, the transom failed somehow, the motor coming off and leaving a gaping hole. The boat sank in 5 minutes, after a 000 call was made and the EPIRB activated, the husband and wife were in the water for 3 hours in lifejackets, hanging on to an esky. A search involving 2 boats, a Customs boat, a plane, and a helicopter took a couple of hours to locate the couple. The helicopter only spotted them after descending to 200m, having flown over them several times higher up. Both OK, sunburnt and glad to be out of the water. I've been told the boat was a 6m Cruise Craft - no doubt more will be revealed soon
oceansky
Funny you shoud mention that Sam, anoteher Cruise Craft (7m) also sank of Townsville 3 weeks ago. There were 9 boats all together sheltered behind pith last night in the atrocious conditions which was very lucky for the guys concerned. They were catching a lot of fish when they first noticed they were going under and managed to drive to the closest boat (a 44’pro boat) and tie up whilst trying to salvage theirs. After only a couple of minutes the cruise craft went completely under and disappeared. We were 100m away and offered the guys a ride back to Lucinda at first light but ended up transferring them to a larger charter vessel heading to Cardwell (one charter passenger then driving the guys directly to Lucinda) as we had a full crew and load already. The guys are not sure what caused the leak at all; although he did say his friend purchased the exact same 685 Cruise Craft at the same time which was moored at Magnetic to be found one morning also sunk. http://www.cruisecraft.com.au/showroom/walkarounds/cruisecraft_outsider_685.php
drednought
Apparently theres a design fault with a self draining system, a ball gets stuck and lets water back in , thats what happend to the boat at pith reef and at magnetic island that was found sunk. hellmansam
I've been told this morning that the boat sunk here was trolling, there was a loud bang and some or all of the transom tore out, the skipper tried to cut the motor free but couldn't cut through the lines quick enough
oceansky
G'day drednought, a ball gets stuck and lets water back in talking with the boys from the Sydney game boat club, they HATE those ball valves. They're always giving trouble. there was a loud bang and some or all of the transom tore out Crikey, bet the boat was put together by someone new on the job or ...maybe the transom was laid up on a Monday or Friday
hellmansam
I'm thinking water got in through motor mount holes. I don't know how old the boat is though..
