Aluminum Spar Stock-frugal idea.

Just wondering if you would be interested in suggesting aluminum spar design specifications for the CS20 that utilize 8' spar sections.

It is difficult to find the aluminum locally on the west coast. UPS will ship 8' packages but the spar specs for the lower section are for 10'.

I was wondering if it were possible to design the spars for an 8' maximum section length? Such as 8', 8', 6'. Still equals 22' of total stock.

The spar sections could be adjusted to 8' lengths, say 8'- 8'- 7'6" to have 9" of bury for the 2 upper sections and come out to 22' overall. You will have to decide if the 50% waste (if it comes in the typical 12' lengths)is more or less than than the freight, and maybe there is a cutting charge. CS 20 hull #1 used tapered aluminum flag poles from the American Flag Co. They come in UPS shippable lengths which we epoxied together. Unfortunately they came out a bit too heavy. The wall thickness is .083" and the upper section is tapered from 3" tube. When rolling the taper, the reduction in diameter causes the wall thickness to become thicker so there is very little reduction in weight. Compare that to the standard upper section of 2" by .065".

Definitely frugal. . .

Did you ever think of using the old aluminum

irrigation tubing? They usually came in about

35' lengths.

Where on the West Coast? Might have an idea if not

to far afield.
