capt jake
I certainly hope that all of you are doing OK after this latest weather disaster. In particular, I am wondering how Charlie is doing. Anybody have any news?
Craig
I am surprized no one answered you . I saw this yesterday Jake and figured you were refering to Charlie Jones in S. Texas yes?? He and Laura are fine and have been active on the TS board the past couple days. If it was another Charlie please specify and I'll see what I can find for you. Guest
Has anyone heard from Steve Day or have any contact numbers?
capt jake
I was refering to Charlie Jones. Glad to hear he is alright. I had forgotten that Steve Day is down that way. I hope he is well also. My father has some friends who just move to LA to retire. They lost everything.
Bruce S Kershaw
I think John Thomas, (He bought my unfinished Weekender.) posted here for a while. They're in Slidel, not far from New Orleans. My brother's wife has family in Mobile. Last week it was, "Naw, we ain't leavin'. It ain't gonna be that bad." The last anyone heard, they had salt water in the house, and were going to try to get out. (mumbling to self...) "Redneck arrogance". Anyhow, with the magnitude of the situation, I figure you can wish the best for everyone, but concentrate your hopes and prayers on those you know. The above is my short-list.
Charlie Jones
Jake- Just saw your post. Thanks for the thoughts. We are so far away from the place we didn't even get clouds from Katrina. We have been watching however with sad eyes. Just this past June Laura and I cruised Tehani through that entire area. We have many friends along the Mississippi and Louisiana coasts. Except for Steve Day and one person who lives IN New Orleans we've heard good stuff from them all. Those two we have heard nothing from. Here's a shot Laura took while we were anchored one evening in Pascagoula Miss. This boathouse is most likely no longer there by the way
Barnacle Jim
Has anyone heard from Cap'n Trey? He lived between Gulf Port and Mobile.
Steve Day
Hey Guys, Gina and I are alive and well here in Daphne AL. We got a lot of wind and a 12' - 15' storm surge on the east shore of Mobile Bay. Some of the damage right on the shore is staggering, but we came through with no damage to the boat or the house. We have been VERY busy with cleanup and relief work with the church. This is the first time I have gotten on the site since the storm. Sorry about the delay. Thank you for your concern and prayers. We are collecting food and basic supplies for the church, repackaging them, and distributing them to folks in south Mississippi as fast as we can. A daunting task, but very worthwhile. The beauty of this is that I now have the time to do this work, now that I am officially retired. Has anyone heard from our friend at Bayou la Batre? Unfortunately, I cannot recall his name right now. Steve
Guest
Please let us know if there is anything that we can do from afar. Mixed blessing to hear good news that you made it okay, while wishing the best during the next months of just cleanup for the most affected areas. Steve Day
MIke, We are concentrating on helping others right now. We are in good shape. The biggest need right now is to get supplies, food and water to the people hurt by the storm. I'm sure you have been seeing the images on the TV and Internet. They need help! We are concentrating our efforts through our church, but there are many options. I'm sure we will be hauling stuff into the area for quite a while. Guest
The Baptist disaster recovery team has just sent our mobile trailer to the region, which is very simular to a carnival trailer for housing, and will be organizing a rotating relief team in the future months. Steve Day
Here is a shot of our boat on Tuesday after Katrina. It is the one in the middle. The second shot is at a marina about 6 miles away. (OK, I forgot these go up in reverse order.) Steve
Steve Day
Ooops on my oops. They were in reverse order in the preview, but correct on the actual message. I'll get that right someday. Steve
Ken_Potts
Steve, I don't know how well supplied your volunteers are. Please let me know if there is anything in short supply that I can send for you to pass on to others. I'm glad to hear that you came through alright. Steve Day
Right now, we are doing OK. We had a Dollar General Store that was damaged and they have donated all the merchandise we can haul off. We have taken three trailer loads out of the store and are distributing it as fast as we can collect it. we are estimating we have collected about 13,000 pounds of merchandise including food, clothing, first aid supplies, pillows, etc. We're going back for more tomorrow. The next step will be to coordinate with a church(s) in Mississippi for delivery. If you want to donate, I would suggest your local church. Almost all of them have connections to get the donations to the right place at 100 cents on the dollar. Thanks for the offer, Steve
Phil Gowans
I'm glad to hear that things are finally getting through. I have been donating to my church's humanitarian relief for years. I like this method because there is so little overhead. It makes your donation go so much farther. I feel a bit guilty in my comfort. Labor day weekend I went sailing with my daughter. She was born 33 years ago in Pensacola, FL. Her birthday is Aug 29 - quite a coincidence, but the weirdest is her name is KATRINA. I tell her she is quite a troublemaker. We had only one Hurricane hit that year and this western boy was nervous, not knowing what to expect. It turned out to be nothing. I can see how locals can become a bit jaded. They are always being told that there is another storm coming and they need to prepare.
Steve Day
Tell Katrina to take heart. No one from around here will be able to forget her name. The supplies are really starting to roll in now. On the way back from Mississippi yesterday we saw three or four convoys of 10 to 15 semis heading west on the interstate. I think we were able to get some supplies to the folks in the interim. Looks like the long term stream is flowing now. I'm sure there will be more needs in the near future. Craig
I got a response from Dave today. They took some tree and roof damage but are otherwise OK. I am sorry to report that Dave's boat took a pecan tree across the bow. Damage assessments are pending.
Barnacle Jim
Thanks, Craig, It's good to know Capt'n Trey is fine. Sorry to hear about the pecan tree and his boat.
capt jake
Yes, it is said to hear of all of the property losses, though it is very good to hear that all (I believe) are well.
