CLIPPER
Heard recently that this canal may be closed. Bad news to boaters going south on the ICW if it is true. Any one know :?: Anchored overnight off the ICW at Black Water creek saw this beautiful dawn. Guest
This has been a struggle for a number of years, with so many reasons being a factor of keeping this issue alive. http://endangered.fws.gov/i/a/saa8q.html This is a central address for further information. But I can't get this website to work this morning. For further information, contact Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, 3100 Desert Road, Suffolk, Virginia 23434, 757-986-3705, M-F 8 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., http://greatdismalswamp.fws.gov. http://www.yarussi.com/dismalswamp.html But this also is an update on this year's developement. There are attempts to revive the interests in the avenue of off water recreation around the canal, therfore keeping it open full time. http://home.hamptonroads.com/stories/story.cfm?story=75135&ran=175187 Dismal Swamp Canal get funding to stay open through year By JEFFREY S. barnacle5
I read on another forum. trailer sailor I think that this has been an issue in several areas of the intercostal. mainly due to lack of goverment funding for dredging operations and the waterways are filling back in with silt. that it is an administration elective of where and how to spend the money and recreational boating isn't all that important in the scheme of greater issues. ( not my opinions just what I read) talk to your congressman about it I guess. the best to all . Bill nice picture.
Tom Lathrop
There are several areas on the North Carolina part of the ICW that have silted to teh point that many boats have to wait on high tide for passage. I saw an item a few weeks ago that the Corps of engineers have been allocated some money for dredging these. Many of these areas require dredging pretty often to keep them clear. Of course, the driving force is likely to be mainly commerce and not pleasure boating.
