Sailz

Howdy Folks.

I am thinking I might be flush enough to pop for set of proper pro made sails for my re-fit of Annie M. This flushedness might only occure by late winter or so, but I am doing the research now.

What I was wonderin was who does Weekender sails? I am assuming that approching just any sail maker would be more expensive than using someone who already has the measurements and patterns (if they are required).

I know of Paul's work, but who else is there?

I will want to get the standard main, but loose footed and a lapper sized headsail. Nothing fancy, just solid and not poly. :D

I might go for a slightly darker shade than white....too bright.

Cheers, TT

You might post a note to Mike Stevenson, the sails they offer are very well done. The sailmaker they use may also do what you are asking. Otherwise, Paul J will make up a first class set for you and he is offering a discount for orders placed this time of year.

I understand he has pretty well worked himself out of his backlog and is able to fill orders on a reasonably timely basis.

I plan on going loose footed main with a lapper as well. I plan on working with Paul to cut the lapper for roller furling. And then use a slightly smaller jib with a wire forestay sewn into it as staysail on a clubfoot.

If it doesn't break the bank I would like them in tanbark.

Any good sail loft will make up what you are asking for, but you will most likely pay dearly for them.

Thanks for the info Barry. Appreciated.

I like your idea of using a wired jib for a staysail. I have been burning some brain smoke trying to come up with a plan in this department myself.

I had figured on creating an inner stay that would be used only when needed. Having the wire in the luff, permanantly is a grand idea....no need, then, for a halyard and all that goes with it. A turnbuckle then?

I had thought to make the mast connection about as high as I could reach from the foredeck. Clip it in at the top, then at the bottom....and bring it up to tension with a turnbuckle.

I would not want an inner stay up there all the time as it makes it a pain to tack the genny( lapper...whatever) across.

What really got me stopped was coming up with a connection at the head of the stay sail, at the mast. Something that was recessed, so that once unclipped, the lacing and such would slip past easy. I was going to set in a 'bit' of 3/8" round brass....I would rather something a lot more substantial.

Got any good ideas?

Not to flog a wet horse....or is that dead horse....I am able to pull up every website in the world (I saw them all today), including The Budda Hat Co.....and still no www.ultasail.com

How fascinating it that?

I figure it is a conspiracy.

or maybe he is blocking Canadians?.....naaaa, not Paul.

Oh, right, Tom is a fellow Canucklian. :)

I wouldn't fuss with it at all, just use the jib halyard to pull it up. Tighten it up good and cleat it off. Easy squeezee!

I've had a number of jibs with wirerope sewn into them. Works great and certainly makes changing things easy.

So are we talking the PVC furler again?? or another design?? I have my sails in hand and kinda think I should have had the wire rope installed, I guess I can have that done later. ??

Paul and I had great intentions.......but somebody left the planet, or the region. ;) Alas, I am here wondering about all of this..... Maybe no furler at all and go with a downhaul system??

STill talking about a furler. But using an extruded aluminum track instead of PVC. Also a drum with a bigger hub so it it takes less effort to furl the sail.

I'm going to put together the PVC furling system to see if it works OK. But I'm inclined to use the extruded aluminum track because it doesn't twist like the PVC track does when slit.

The wirerope sewn into the staysail eliminates the need for another forestay. It has it built into it. It is still flexible enough that stowing it isn't a problem. I would also have a wire rope sewn into the standard jib for the same reason. Then I can leave the furling system inplace or not put it up at all. I would still have a dedicated forestay at the tip of the bowsprit either way.

Back to the top for this one.

Remember when we all talked about Ulta Sails website....and I could not get in yet you all could?

I talked to my web tech about that he and figured out there actual was something wrong with Pauls server (or something).

Now I get an error message when accessing his site.

http://www.ultasails.com/

Perhaps he is no longer in business or doing web related sales?

There is nothing wrong with the server to my knowledge, everything is functioning as it is supposed to. If you are having a problem getting to the site it is most likely on your isp's end or your isp could have been identified as a spam source but most of that is just for email not website access.

I would check with your isp to see if they are running any software that filters web sites or is a porn blocking software. Some of those programs will block access to sites that they are not supposed to block.

I have not activated any blocking software or filters on the server. So I have no idea why you would be being denied access on my end. You can try adding index.htm after the / and see if that helps.

Yes I re-located 5 months ago to sunny warm Florida. You guys can have the cold, I no longer have to wear a knee brace to walk so I am a happy camper, don't know why I didn't move years ago. But it is raining today and supposed to all day, but it's 65 degrees at 9:30 in the morning in the middle of December.
