Barry Pyeatt
I was referred to a source that offers plain white Tyvek in up to 10' widths. There were some discussions some time back but no one had a source. This company will sell you what ever amount you want at $ .30 (30 cents) a sq. ft. rounded up to the next higher sq. ft. I was told that this is the soft Tyvek and it works well for sails. I have no personal experience with them, but the person that gave me the information has purchased from them several times and has had great service. http://goodling_outdoor.tripod.com/goodlingoutdoorproducts/id22.html
Gaylen Beardsley
Barry, would one have to use the same "duck tape" process, or is this stuff sewable?
Barry Pyeatt
It is sewn into knapsacks, jackets, ponchos and all manor of outdoor gear. It is tough and holds up well. So I don't know why you couldn't sew it. The "hard" Tyvek is a little difficult to handle and sew but it is done as well. My friend makes knapsacks and bags for camping gear out of it and prints (silkscreens) logos on it for company premiums and awards.
Frank Hagan
We did an article on alternative sail material, including Tyvek sails a while back, and its at http://www.messing-about.com/weekender/sails.htm There's not much there, but there is a link to a site with more discussion on using Tyvek for sails: http://www.boat-links.com/Tyvek/. capt jake
There is a Tyvek tape to taping seams together on houses. It may work on this. I have about 60' of a 10' wide roll left over. Unfortunately it has a banner ad on it . It is softer and more reenforced than the "Tyvek" brand.
