richard
According the plans the stringers should be attached to the bottom before installing it on the keel. Is it not more simple to put first the bottom on the keel and then the stringers? (easier to bend bottom) Richard
Dave R1
The stringers won't have much effect on the ease of bending the bottom to fit the keel. The bend is a pretty gentle one. The nice thing about putting the stringers on first is that you can do it with the bottom turned over. This will allow you to pre-drill and drive the screws more easily. when you are ready to attach the bottom to the keel, smear a thin layer of thickened epoxy on the keel. Then put the bottom in place and screw it down. Put a screw at the front and then check alignment before driving the rest of the screws. The thickened epoxy will fill any small gaps that you might have between the bottom and the keel. Just remember to scrape off any squeeze out before it hardens. tdrown
Bend the stingers while you have the ability to place the bottom plywood on the ground with the stingers underneath. I used a 5 Gallon Plaster bucket to help bend it along. Have something heavy or another person bend the stringer ahead of you while you screw it in. The weight of a person sandwitching the bottom and the stringer together also gets them a little closer without having to clamp before screwing. All this would be significantly more difficult when the bottom is 12" in the air.
Florin {VACATIONER}
Yeap, they're right! On the Vac you have to install the floor boards on the keel first and then put in the panel joiners and the stringers because they would be too hard to lift if done first for they are heavy. But drilling and screwing from the bottom up is kindof a pain and ye have glue dripping on you while you do this, plus there's not much room there to work... For the Weekender is probably a lot easier to assemble them on the floor and then screw them to the keel. Florin
