Wondering about hogged canoe issues?

I can't prove it this but people try to force the boat into the shape they want instead of the shape the wood wants to take. You can bend wood it into any shape you want but if you don't have the structural strength to hold it in place, it will try to return to close to it's original shape. I am pretty well convinced that most times it is a bad design causes hogging.

My first (prototype) canoe hogged. I spent a lot of time working out why it happened.  You will see people trying to 'pre-bend' gunwales.  It's better to just get the design right to start with. I now design all my boats this way and no I am not giving that secret away, took me to many hours to figure it out!

Now I am not saying it will not happen because wood has internal stress that can bend in strange ways. But assuming the wood doesn't go wild and twist strangely I don't expect it is going to happen but I haven't had a report of any of my canoes hogging.with my designs.

Thanks Jeff, I certainly don't want any trade secrets ;-).  I really like your approach to design out the hogging potential.

Could you elaborate on the design a bit more.  The white water lines are evident in abysdncr's detailed build thread.

Does the Wallops Island 12 have any rocker?

Center height?

Bow height?

Tracking, hard, medium, medium loose?

This is for loaded canoe day fun at 125 - 150 lbs.

I can measure some stuff for you later. No rocker to the design though. My FreeB hogged a little, but that's all on me as the one who cut the frames and made the stringers too big (stick with the 5/8"X1" & 5/8"X11.5" gunwales).

With the WI12, if your frames are jigged up securely and with the stringers per the plans, the strength of the design comes from the lashed assembly, not any particular 1 or 2 key stringers that can pull things wonky, so everything conforms very nicely.
