  1. Thanks for the help and here's the FROG (and leaves). I did install the footrests but removed them for the oiling (it still needs a couple more coats of oil). Any advice before I get much further?
  2. Thanks! So the center beam also get notched and goes on *top* of the lam beam, right? And the coaming gets lashed to the lam beam in front and the frame in the back? There were 4 L-shaped metal brackets. From looking at other posts I thought maybe they were for coaming support, but yes, I did get the foot rests so that's what they are for.
  3. Is this the correct location for the coaming? Also, I get the impression that the metal brackets are not really necessary, but exactly where would they go if I use them?
  4. Hi, I'm building from one of Jeff's kits and the manual. I'm on pages 34-35 of the manual and have a few questions: 1. On what frame does the laminated beam go on? I'm guessing 8' 2"? 2. Should the frame and/or laminated beam get trimmed to fit the frame better (this is the beam from the kit)? 3. Between what frames do the floorboards go? 4. Bow deck beams- do the end right at the edges of the frames? 5. Stern deck beams (the two side ones)- do they end at the frame edges (i.e. they're only about a foot long)? Thanks, Charlie
  5. I know this is an old topic, but fwiw here are some suggestions for the (already good) manual. My background- I bought the Vardo deluxe kit and I have a good bit of woodworking experience but I'm a *complete* novice on boats. 1. Add a generic kayak diagram showing stringers, gunwales, stern, keel, coaming, etc. 2. Maybe add a glossary or index (is a chine also a stringer?) 3. The numbers on the drawings of the various boats in the back of the manual are hard to impossible to read. Maybe they don't matter? 4. I tried to find a reference to the "coaming brackets" in the manual, maybe I missed it? I mention this because one of the kit frame brackets had words that sort of implied it should be mounted around the coaming and that two were required. I guess that text was referring to something else located on the overall plan (or am I missing a part?). 5. A (reduced) copy of the boat-specific plan identifying the parts would be nice. Some seem obvious, others, not so much. Or maybe the recommendation should be to buy a plan with the kit? 6. I had to dig around a bit to find the recommended ratio of the scarf (8:1). It'd be nice to mention that in the manual. 7. A few grammar errors. At this point, I have my strongback built and the four frames mounted. Scarfing jig is almost done and I hope to pick up enough WRC today.
  6. Yes, for those of us in the southeast, the trucking costs for WRC is really painful. I'm starting a Vardo and was wondering if you have tried the cypress yet? Looking at some wood properties tables, it looks like it will be about 40% heavier than WRC and a little harder to bend. But the cypress will also be stronger, and I guess you could maybe make the stringers a little smaller (thinner and/or narrower), though I guess you'd have to change the frames then.
