  1. Been away for awhile: newborn daughter, finishing up phase 2 of house renovations, trying not to kill the contractor for royally screwing the pooch in my garage..... Anyways, I'm finally around to building my shop space in the garage. Currently have my dad's old delta 8" dinosaur of a tablesaw, a jig saw, compound miter saw, router and diy router table, and building my workbench and wall mounted tool storage. The question: would you all suggest a scroll saw or a benchtop band saw for building a ravenswood? Why one over the other?
  2. If you have a Benjamin Moore around, their Aura exterior can be bought in Quart sizes, in semi gloss, low lustre, satin, flat and in pretty much any color imaginable. It's waterbased.
  3. Any thoughts on a splined skin such as seen here: http://www.qajaqusa.org/newsletter/Masik_Summer_2009_082809.pdf versus sewing or stapling?
  4. FYI I'm now a L2 Kayak Touring and L2 SOT kayaking instructor
  5. Sounds like Pex tubing used for plumbing.
  6. You midwesterner's are spoiled with Menards. I go up to Michigan every summer for a week and usually help my father in law and uncles out with some stuff and we go there.
  7. I'be been pricing out and hunting down materials. At HD/Lowes they have cedar boards, but the ones I could find are rough on one side, almost like they peeled bark off, and smooth/sanded on the other. Has anyone used these or am I just looking in the wrong bins? Also would 3/4" stock be worth planing or ripping down 1/8" to 5/8? I have a vintage craftsman benchtop jointer and a rockwell/delta 34-500 table saw (of which I need to get a 0 clearance plate. Thanks!
  8. Received plans on Thursday, thanks! Will be studying the plans and the assembly manual over the next couple of months. Won't be able to start until we cleanout and reorganize the garage, hopefully before the Virginia summer kicks in....
  9. Weight based is much for fair than cost based. One can buy a $3000 watch that weighs in at a pound and play nearly $100 in shipping, wheres a $10 lead brick will ship for $2.50.....
  10. Love the tritone. Thinking of doing something similar but as a modified CG racing stripe.
  11. This summer I'll be gone two weekends in May, a week in July, another July weekend, a weekend in August. We are planning on the baby coming after Jan 25th, so the actual work won't be done till early May. Wife doesn't want to go through another summer heavily pregnant!
  12. Ordered Ravenswood plans today. Probably won't get around building till fall or winter with all the house renovations going, but would like to start or at least finish before the baby arrives. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  13. All, One of the perks of being the state paddlecraft coordinator is I can get stacks of the orange ACA/USCG If Found decals for kayaks and canoes. If you would like one or some, please let me know and I'll mail them out to you.
  14. Thank you Jeff. I was thinking about the VARDO as well, but a 17' boat feels a bit on the longish side, though my garage is about 27' deep. As the designer, how do you feel about the stress of a kayak tow with a paddler with the tow point being on one of the frames?
  15. Hi all, I am the Virginia Paddlecraft Coordinator for the Coast Guard Auxiliary. I currently have a Pelican Strike 110x, but have been wanting to build a kayak for years. Aside from personal use, the kayak will be used for environmental patrols, public safety and other on water events. I'm debating between the Black Dog Albatross 14 and the Ravenswood. I'm currently 215 but working to trim down to 185-190. The kayak will have to be able to support and short and long tow and patrols are not allowed to last longer than 6 hours a day, and call for a one hour off water break after 3 hours. I am a decent paddler and will be attending L1 and L2 coastal kayaking instructor school about a month from now. Thanks all! Andy W.
